189072 I see where you are coming from April. I really didn't like toad while I was reading, and thought it was weird that the other animals did like him. It is interesting that you bring up that Toad reminded you of an alcoholic. After reading this I read some articles about Kenneth Grahame. His dad was an alcoholic, and even sent his children to live with their Grandmother when Kenneth was just 5 years old because he was drinking so much. My personal theory is that Toad was based off of Grahame's father. When I was reading the part when Toad is literally going through withdrawals because he can't drive I was thinking 1. This is very weird to have in a children's book and 2. The author must have experienced seeing someone go through withdrawls first hand.I think possibly the reason why everyone likes Toad and Grahame writes his character as likeable despite everyone knowing his flaws is because he cared for his own father despite the alcoholism.
