Ella, for me I chose it simply because it won the Goodreads award in 2011 and it was by a Japanese author. What could go wrong? I for one don't see it. The story is intriguing but could very well have been about half the size.

Just finished the book. I enjoyed it. Funny, I feel more like the book resembled our society's movement towards progressive socialism. We live in a society where differing opinions automatically make you the enemy. We continue to bash those that "speak out of line" with what progressive leaders determine is acceptable.

Not looking for political debate. Just interesting how different sides see the influence of modern society in the book. I do not like the elements of group think. Julia talks about just participating and being the loudest but never really believed it. I wonder how much of her actions influenced those around her and it was all a show. Winston couldn't have been the only one that remembered things were really different but no one was willing to challenge he system. The central authority had a lot of power.

I am still working my way through this mess. I gave it a pass early because of the cultural, translation, and time frame differences. But I am about 3/4ers and if he says "large misshapen head" one more time I will punch my own face. The story is pretty much at a standstill. 3 hours of listening about little is advancing this story. Not even good plot development happening. Seems like useless detail.

Super happy for this month. Still finishing 1Q84! Man this thing is dragging out. I will get a couple of others also.
