I do think Murakami expresses like "all" of modern Japan (or at least tries to expres..."
Ella, for me I chose it simply because it won the Goodreads award in 2011 and it was by a Japanese author. What could go wrong? I for one don't see it. The story is intriguing but could very well have been about half the size.

Not looking for political debate. Just interesting how different sides see the influence of modern society in the book. I do not like the elements of group think. Julia talks about just participating and being the loudest but never really believed it. I wonder how much of her actions influenced those around her and it was all a show. Winston couldn't have been the only one that remembered things were really different but no one was willing to challenge he system. The central authority had a lot of power.
