185 Possibly The Wanderer by Sharon Creech?
185 I think this is Sweetwater by Lawrence Yep.

185 Congrats on finding it, Ashley....and good job CLM! I'll move this to solved and add the book to our shelves. BTW, Sterkarm Handshake is a YA book, so I'll be adding it to that folder.
185 Hurrah! I'm happy to help. I'll move this to solved and add the book to our shelves for you.
185 In the Keep of Time - but I don't recall if there's an autistic child or not...
185 OK, I'll keep looking around. Jack Warner has a couple of tiger-on-the-loose tales: Maneater and Shikar
185 Not an exact match, it's set in LA and the tiger escapes from a zoo, not transport, but worth a shot: Claw

if that's not the one you're looking for, how long ago did you read it? It will help narrow things down.
185 oops, didn't realize Unwritten Girl had been mentioned already. What about The Book Keeper's Oracle?
185 Just came across this one: The Unwritten Girl "Rosemary faces life-or-death perils in the Land of Fiction in a quest to rescue her brother, who has lost himself in a book."

I appreciate your help, but I am certainly not childless by choice."

Yeah, me neither. But sometimes it helps me to pretend that it IS by choice (my mom's favorite advice: "fake it 'til you make it"). There ARE benefits to a childfree life and reading something from the POV of people who've chosen that life has helped give me a little perspective.

But - I just thought of this great book:

I'm Taking My Eggs and Going Home: How One Woman Dared to Say No to Motherhood. It's a memoir of a woman who went through the whole thing: wanting a baby, failed infertility treatments, and finally reaching acceptance.

Edit: you may also want to check out the author's website: LifeWithoutBaby.com, "an international online community to help women come to terms with being childless-not-by-choice."

185 Also, if you're looking for non-fiction: Two Is Enough: A Couple's Guide to Living Childless by Choice looks good.

185 This book doesn't come out until September, but from the description it sounds like it might be the kind of thing you're looking for: The Last First Day: A Novel
185 Great! As a side note, this is the third time this has been someone's "lost" book. I'll have to read it, it's obviously memorable. :)
185 Don't give up, David! Someone will know it eventually. To help narrow things down a bit, about how long ago did you read these books?
185 I'm glad you found it, Paul! I'll move this thread to "solved" and shelve the book for you....assuming this is the right one? The Wish Giver: Three Tales of Coven Tree
185 Roughly how long ago did you read it?

185 Just came across this: Spacebread. And Born of Flame: A Spacebread Story.

I haven't read them, but they sound like what you described, with the cats in outer space. Although it seems that Spacebread is a female cat, so maybe not.

185 There's also Star Ka'at by Andre Norton

edit: and Star Ka'at World and Star Ka'ats and the Plant People and Star Ka'ats and the Winged Warriors. Hm. I never knew it was a series.
185 Hm. You said she was hiding...did she escape from her kidnapper and was hiding from him? Or was the kidnapper hiding her in the fields/sewer? Was it a kidnapping for ransom or a creepy pedophile thing? Just trying to jog your memory!
