Spacebread, a large white cat known throughout the galaxy as an adventuress and a scoundrel, uncovers a plot to dominate the planet Ralph when she goes in search of her stolen belt buckle.
Found this book in a little bookshop in Solvang, California and purchased it entirely because of the cover and the dust jacket synopsis: "Spacebread is a large white cat, intelligent and daring, known throughout the galaxy as a buccaneering adventuress. She has been everywhere, seen everything. She does not tolerate theft of her possessions or the murder of her friends." It was a fun space romp and I'm glad I was taken in by the strangely blunt synopsis.
I rescued this vintage book while cleaning out an old estate and kept it rather than throwing it into the donate pile, mainly because of the cover art showing this fierce-looking white cat, and being curiously titled Spacebread.
That turned out to be one of the best book hoarding decisions I've ever made, as this was an unexpectedly delightful read - a cosmic adventure involving a swashbuckling cat racing through space and distant planets, murder, revenge, stolen treasures, ancient mythical creatures (and one gluttonous creature reminiscent of Jabba the Hutt haha), and even a seer. All woven together in a dramatic race against time to foil an evil planetary takeover plot, as they discover the truth of the mystery behind Spacebread's stolen belt buckle. And at its core, also a tale of loyalty and friendship.
Just deliciously entertaining if you're in need of a light whimsical read.
I remember first reading this book when I was in middle school. I also remember how much I adored it. While I perhaps do not love it as much now as I did then, I still think that it's a very enjoyable read.
