Kym's suggestion of "The Last Thirteen" series by James Phelan seems like a solid guess. The first one in the series is Thirteen and the author is Australian. Are you sure that's not it?

There's the Nightmare Room series by RL Stine, which were middle grade horror. Don't Forget Me! is first in the series and about a girl who hypnotizes her brother and it works better than expected.

If that's not it, when were you in middle school? A range of years will help with searching.

Possibly the Teen Witch series by Megan Barnes?

The first one is Lucky 13, and there is one called Gone With the Witch where they go back in time to a southern plantation.

I found this, which seems to be the third book in a series that might be it....I'll keep looking to see if I can find book one.Dance of Death
