This is a modern take, more "inspired by" than a traditional retelling, but definitely a gender twist : Beast by Brie Spangler.

Hahah, I've read this one twice: once in the 80s and again a few years ago and I don't remember any severed heads either. There's a lot of weirdness in this book, I don't think it's possible to remember all of it! Glad your mystery is solved!

Hi Bren, I just got home and checked my copy of Disturb Not The Dream. Odds are high it's the one you're looking for. It opens with a prologue in which another family (or at least, the mom and dad)?were murdered in the house years before. The family living there during the story (main characters) are Bertram and his wife Alice, and teenage kids Richard and Stacey. There is a babysitter named Amy who watches the youngest child, Lissie, and has an affair with the father.

Beautiful Malice was published in 2010, so probably not your book, but it's a fun read.
