185 A couple of shots in the dark, here. Maybe one of the McGurk mysteries by E.W. Hildick?

There's also a really obscure set of books from the 70s (I think only two in series) about a group of kids who call themselves "The Secret Society For The Detection And Solution Of Crime" - both stories are set in Cape Cod. One is: Last Summer's Smugglers
185 Avalon, perhaps?

"Seventeen-year-old Jeth Seagrave, the leader of a ragtag team of teenage mercenaries, skirts the line between honor and the law in an attempt to win freedom for his sister and himself in the form of their parents' old spaceship, Avalon."

185 Wildman, maybe?
185 Link to Sue's suggestion The Keeper of the Isis Light

There have been a lot of editions of this book but I think one of them has a cover that matches your description.
185 Your description made me think of the Edge Chronicles but I'm not sure if it's a match The Edge Chronicles 1: The Curse of the Gloamglozer: First Book of Quint The Edge Chronicles 1 The Curse of the Gloamglozer First Book of Quint by Paul Stewart
185 Yep, that was my first guess, too.
185 A Google book search turns up this: West Against The Wind as containing the word daguerreotype, set in the west, with coming of age themes....

from Kirkus review: "A sturdy tale of a 14-year-old tomboy facing the realities of growing up, complicated by her being part of the westward trek to California in the 1850's. Abigail Parker, her mother, and her brother have joined a small wagon train to attempt to find her father, a victim of gold fever from whom they have not heard since he left their midwest home a year ago. With them is her father's brother, a taciturn man; his refined new wife; and the mysterious Matthew, who asks to accompany them for reasons he keeps to himself. As they travel from Independence to Yuba City, Abby must deal with her emergence as a woman, with all the changes and limitations that that threatens. Among the changes is a growing feeling of attraction to Matthew, in part inspired by empathy when he confides his plight: he is searching for his runaway sister and fears what he will find. As the journey continues, the hardships increase until the party's arrival in California in a state of near starvation, complicated by tragedies that have touched them all and given Abby a more realistic outlook."
185 Yay! Happy to help.
185 Just a wild guess: A Yellow Raft in Blue Water ?
185 A Girl Like Me, maybe?
185 Waiting for Normal by Leslie Connor?

From the book description: "Addie is waiting for normal. But Addie's mother has an all-or-nothing approach to life: a food fiesta or an empty pantry, her way or no way."
185 Another guess: Little Hands Clapping (one edition has a blue cover and it seems to have quirky characters)
185 Awesome!! I'm temporarily off FB so I missed the post. Here's the link to the book: On The Outside, Looking In - in case someone else is looking for the same book again one day, this thread will help. I'll mark the thread as solved. So glad it was found!!
185 Hi Nancy,

I'm sorry we haven't had any luck with this one yet. But I thought you might enjoy these other discussion threads in the meantime. Not because they relate to this query, but other reasons ;)

185 Maybe NATION by Terry Pratchett?
185 Nancy, I've poked around and haven't had luck with this one yet. Time for some questions: does your friend have a sense of whether it was a new book at the time she read it? Was it a 70's teen paperback, or did it have an older feel? Did she get it from a school library? Remember the cover? Any details can help narrow the search!

185 A guess: So This is How it Ends: "During an earthquake in the year 2012 five teens are transported seventy-five years into the future, where the end of the world is imminent, and are drawn together by a mysterious force."
