There's also a really obscure set of books from the 70s (I think only two in series) about a group of kids who call themselves "The Secret Society For The Detection And Solution Of Crime" - both stories are set in Cape Cod. One is: Last Summer's Smugglers

A Google book search turns up this: West Against The Wind as containing the word daguerreotype, set in the west, with coming of age themes....

Nancy, I've poked around and haven't had luck with this one yet. Time for some questions: does your friend have a sense of whether it was a new book at the time she read it? Was it a 70's teen paperback, or did it have an older feel? Did she get it from a school library? Remember the cover? Any details can help narrow the search!
