174195 FAQ's

Can a book count for more than one story?
Sorry but no. Please pick one news story to pair with each book read.

Can you find more than one connection for the same book/news story pair?
Yes, you can find as many connections as possible. This is meant to be fun so don't stress too much about your connections. If you can define then it likely is fine.

Does any "own voices" book count? Or would it be "own voices" connected to the news story?
The "own voices" book has to be directly connected to the group that is featured in the story. For example, the Utah story is about LGBTQIA+ rights and the book (Autoboyography) is an "own voices" book for the same group. It also happens to be set in Utah (score!)

174195 It's not news that 2020 has been tough. For just about everyone. And I think we're all pretty ready for the year to come to a close. But even in the hardest years, there's some positive events to be found. Focusing on that positivity can do some serious healing to our (tired) brains.

description

So this event's team challenge is focused on finding that good. In this time's team challenge, you and your teammates will be tasked with reading books to go along with positive news stories from 2020.

Each book read for the team will need to connect in some way to one of the positive news stories. The more connections you find, the more points you can earn.

Theme (i.e. age, storyline, topic, etc.): 1 point
Numbers (i.e. dates, article topics, page count, etc.): 1 point
Location: 2 points
Names (incl. authors, characters): 3 points
Title (article subjects found in title of book): 3 points
Objects (found in article and on cover of the book or major plot-point): 3 points
Own Voices: 5 points

Grand Prize!
Finish a book connected to every positive news story below: 75 points

What about pages?
This is a bit of a bonus. For every 1,000 pages read as a group, you earn one wildcard. Wildcards allow you to cross one article off your list, getting you closer to the grand prize!

Examples:
News story: [Utah] Banned Discredited LGBTQ ‘Conversion Therapy’ as Destructive
Book: Autoboyography by Christina Lauren
Set in Utah = 2 points
LGBTQ+ themes = 1 point
Own Voices = 5 points

News Story: 98-Year-old D-Day Veteran Recreates Photo With Belgian Boy Who Befriended Him During WWII
The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary
Theme (reuniting) = 1 point

You will be given a spreadsheet to track your reading adventures.

174195 There’s a listopia for that week but not a weekly topic just yet: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

I think a staircase would be a broad interpretation (a “Keep it Simple” if you follow that approach). But it’s your challenge so totally up to you :)

174195 I came across a fun challenge on Litsy that seems as if it would overlap well with the ATY challenge.

You make a numbered list of books (1-25) that are your priority reads and then the person who runs the challenge makes a Bingo card each month. You add your books to the card according to the number and try for a Bingo that month. Really it's just a way to organize your reading order.

You also get extra "points" if you read certain numbered books.

If you have Litsy, the person running the challenge is @TheAromaofBooks. But I can post the November card once it is available :)

I think that’s the most important point when it comes to audiobook. It all depends on how you learn and take in info. I have to have just the right audiobook since I’m a very visual learner and often lose focus with audio. But many others are the opposite. Do we shouldn’t devalue that type of learning :)

What do members think could be gained from Facebook vs. GR?

I would have concerns with splitting focus and, like Ellie said, GR is a nice “escape” from all the things that come along with FB. I’m wondering if we could accomplish some of those positive things here.

One of the biggest things lacking with GR, for me, is image sharing. But we could possibly tie up with an image sharing site of some sort so that we could still maintain focus here. Just as an example.

Just a heads up, the site for the map has been changed to allow for easier updates. The color code now provides intervals but can be interacted with in order to see more specific details.

174195 I am so sorry for being MIA in updating the projects. I don't have to tell the group that it's been a rough year and I can't say I was surprised when I saw that the last update was in April.

But the timeline is now updated through message 249! :)

A Note:
I have to trust that the dates provided by members are accurate, unless I personally know a book. Some people give more general dates and a few were provided by multiple members, with different dates. I did the best I could to enter them accurately. If someone sees a repeat book or error please let me know and I can correct :)

174195 Sunday:

Tokyo was bustling, vibrant, and full of activity. It made it incredibly difficult to pick our next destination. But we ran into a super friendly couple while watching a show at Kabuki-za, who really sold us on the beauty of Alberta. So we caught the next flight to Canada!

174195 We’ve been so busy sight-seeing, checking outs local restaurants, and visiting with locals that we didn’t even have time to record the journey. But the fatigue caught up with us and we’re taking an early evening to do some relaxing travel journaling.

Saturday
After finishing up a chunk of the Ring Road, we decided that we needed a bit of change of scenery, moving from the outdoors to the bustling city. We caught a flight from Keflavik International Airport to the amazing city of Tokyo, Japan.
