158858 Anyone want to do a BR on a Non-Completist title?

Mention it here and see if anyone is interested and we can get it set up!

158858 Let the games begin!

We are currently reading/discussing

April 12 to 18 - Chapter 1

If you are referencing things ahead of this section, be sure to use a spoiler tag. If it is a discussion of something in this section (or, later on, a section prior to what we are reading), I don't think a spoiler tag is necessary.

Have fun and happy reading!
158858 This folder is for Buddy Reads discussions on books that are part of any of the Completionist lists posted on this site. Feel free to suggest a BR for one of these books, and we can get the discussion set up here!

158858 ⭐Ally⭐ - colored - and we are taking our time with it so maybe it won't be too much of a burden for you with school going on.

158858 Wow - those are big books! I have heard mixed reviews about Battle Royale - most that it is all hype - so I worry that it wouldn't be as great as I would hope. I am not familiar with the other book. For now I will probably wait and see how these Buddy Reads go, but thanks for the offer!

158858 No problem! I am excited - I have never done a Buddy Read and I start two tomorrow!

158858 Greetings! I am going to go ahead and create this thread for the Watchmen Buddy Read starting on April 12, 2015. (Sorry if I have overstepped your moderatorship, Justin! If so, you can force me to do a Finnegans Wake Buddy Read! Also, I thought about creating a Buddy Read specific folder, but it appears that it will not let me.

RachelvlehcaR and Suzan are in - anyone else want to join us?

The book is 12 chapters. We will be reading one chapter a week and discussing as we go. Here is the official breakdown:

Bold is what we are currently reading
April 12 to 18 - Chapter 1
April 19 to 25 - Chapter 2
April 26 to May 2 - Chapter 3
May 3 to 9 - Chapter 4
May 10 to 16 - Chapter 5
May 17 to 23 - Chapter 6
May 24 to 30 - Chapter 7
May 31 to June 6 - Chapter 8
June 7 to 13 - Chapter 9
June 14 to 20 - Chapter 10
June 21 to 27 - Chapter 11
June 28 to July 4 - Chapter 12

This somewhat slow pace should give us time to discuss as well as time to read other books at the same time.

158858 I am in the middle of a section of the book all about Joelle van Dyne and I am not really getting much of it. It all seems very disconnected and steam of conscious rambling (or "cocoa dancing" which my auto correct wanted to change "conscious rambling" to).

Anyone else having the same problem with this section?

158858 Seems like 223 will be a good reference point page

158858 Watchman Buddy Read - potential break down schedule:

12 Chapters - I am cool with one or two a week. Since I am always reading so many other books, I don't mind taking my time with this (also, I have another Buddy Read starting on Monday). I actually would probably vote for one a week starting this Sunday with discussion on that chapter lasting the entire week - moving to a new chapter and discussion each Sunday (trying not to read ahead if possible!)

If we decide on two chapters a week, same format, just 6 weeks instead of 12.

Thoughts?

I have the book so I am ready to start this Sunday!

158858 Yeah, Justin seems pretty chill, so it is probably no big deal - but since it is his new it will probably make him happy to be wanted. :)

158858 Yeah - I was trying to not steal his moderating thunder!
Apr 09, 2015 02:04PM

158858 I am picking up Watchmen today at the library.

Where has Justin gone? I have not seen him on Goodreads for a bit.

158858 I think this discussion is actually helping with pulling in some of the stuff we may be missing. If all of us discusses the parts that stuck with us, this thread will be our "notes" and it can help us keep up with everything!

I know the mention of howling fantods on here (which I missed the first time through) made it stick out to me when it came back up again!

This is most certainly an understatement! :)

158858 Congrats! Welcome to Part II

Lots and lots and lots of drugs would be my guess.

From what I have read, DFW killed himself because of depression (which there is a lot of talk about in the book, too - suicide and depression) and he was a tennis star at some point. So, I think this must be very autobiographical (and perhaps it was therapeutic for him?)
Apr 09, 2015 06:11AM

158858 Yeah - I am just reading it when I can and sometimes I focus and sometimes I skim. (obviously I am missing stuff based on some of my previous posts). But, that's just how it will have to be because I don't have extra time for notes, deep study, etc.

158858 Kirstin just won the internet for the day! :)
Apr 08, 2015 06:28PM

158858 Kristin - It is quite possible, but how many other books have this much tennis and drugs in them?
