158858 Discuss the Reading List Completist May Selection Beloved by Toni Morrison here.
Apr 27, 2015 04:39AM

158858 Looks like we had a tie in one of our polls again!

So, in May, we will have two choices from the Time list - and, in case anyone wants to do both and needs some extra time, we will run these through the end of June (I will run a poll from a different list for an additional June read as well).

The Time reads are Beloved and Deliverance.

From the NPR Sci-Fi/Fantasy Poll it was a blowout! On May 15th we will be reading The Princess Bride.

Happy Reading!

I finished the book on the 20th."

Wow - you flew! Your last post was on the 20th and you said you were just finishing part 1!

Oh, man! I feel you there - I have been fighting to fit reading in lately. I hate that I am dozing off while reading in the evenings!

Right . . . the superheros are more human than super. They are dealing with all the faults we usually look to superheros to avoid - because superheros are supposed to be who we want to be, idolize, etc.

Yeah - and for some reason my reading grove has been thrown off lately - in the past week I think I have only read about 10 pages of Infinite Jest!

158858 Since this story jumps around so much and each section can take it in such an odd direction . . . I am trying to think back to page 183 to remember what is going on. I wish I had the copy of the book with me!

As mentioned in our earlier discussions, it makes me wonder if every copy of the book is different . . .

And actually - I have kind of hit a wall where I am at - I need to get motivated to get reading again!

158858 Just finished the graphic part of chapter 2. I am saving the prose for tomorrow.

I am loving the character development and the mysteries from the past as well as the mysteries of the present and the way it goes back and forth.

The Comedian is very well written - you want to hate him, but you feel sorry for him, and maybe sometimes you even agree with him. He is definitely a faulty hero.

158858 Finished last night - this is definitely one of the Grand-daddies of the Post-Apocalyptic/Dystopian/Virus/Monsters-taking-over-the-world stories.

This book had to be a commentary on where Matheson thought we were headed as a society - not just a simple tale of vampires created by a virus.

It is amazing how much he fits in to a 160 page book. I am thinking that Matheson must have been a master of telling a lot of story in very few pages.

158858 NOTE: The spoiler link contains a big plot spoiler, so don't click on it unless you are really ready to read it!

Last night my backyard was full of rabbits - I posted a picture on facebook saying it was "Gettin' all Watership Down in my backyard!"

Someone posted a spoiler, though, saying (view spoiler)

158858 Reading about Eschaton the tennis version of Global Thermonuclear War. I had to stop part way through as I was starting to lose focus. Will hopefully finish it tomorrow.

158858 Today I ready about (view spoiler)

Robert aches for companionship - that is very clear in today's reading - and it is very understandable.

The investigation is interesting. (view spoiler)

Yeah, I just have too many darn unread books that I want to read!

158858 Not too much discussion on this one - how many Watership readers do we have out there? I would be joining in if I hadn't read it before, but I rarely repeat books. This was a pretty good one!

158858 No problemo - so much going on around here - it is easy to miss!

158858 Time to find out more about the Watchmen

We are currently reading/discussing

April 19 to 25 - Chapter 2

If you are referencing things ahead of this section, be sure to use a spoiler tag. If it is a discussion of something in this section (or, later on, a section prior to what we are reading), I don't think a spoiler tag is necessary.

Have fun and happy reading!

158858 Stephanie - I am jealous that you had time to finish it this weekend. I have been so busy, not much time to read. Hopefully I will finish it by Tuesday!
Apr 18, 2015 07:47PM

158858 My favorite part of Chapter 1 was how they introduced the characters - Rorschach trying to drum up interest in their plight by contacting old members of his superhero crew only to be met by apathy.

It has been hard all week to not move on since I finished Ch1 on Tuesday - excited to start Chapter 2 tomorrow or Monday!

158858 Jessica - yup - the movie footnote is in part one . . . but, I skimmed it and go back to it occasionally so you can read it anytime.
