152301 What did you read this week?
Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

Did you read a book from this author before?
In 2011, I read one of his novellas based on a video game. I didn't know it was by him but I enjoyed it.

What was the most impressive point, from a 1st book point of view?
The story was really well structured, everything unfolded at the right time and it was obvious he knew exactly where he wanted to go with the city and the magical system.

Did you enjoy the book? Would you recommend it?
I enjoyed it, but the beginning was too much slow paced for my tastes. I think there are more pleasant books from the author, so something more recent will be a better choice.

152301 Finished this night! The last part was really interesting and I liked that everything fell in place. The magical system was entertaining, the romance was cute and all the mystery around Elantris was great.
My main complain is the slow paced beginning and the political oriented plot in Kae (all my last fantasy books are about thrones and I'm not interested in this subject).
I'll jump with pleasure in another Sanderson's book :)

152301 April 18: The folder for week 24 (a book based entirely on its cover) is available.

Reminder about spoilers policy: talking about a book/movie/tv show is ok, but NEVER tell about a twist, a death or the end outside a private discussion with someone who had finished the story. It's really annoying to read about an important thing on the web, before you read it in the book.
Of course, you can comment about this important thing you liked or disliked, but if you want to say exactly what it is about, use a spoiler tag (see "some html is ok" above the text box).
Feel free to ask a member to use the spoiler tag if you see him/her speak about an important outcome. You can too send me a message asking for a temporary spoiler warning in the title (I'll delete the "offending" post if it's not edited after several days). Thanks!

152301 Week 24: a book based entirely on its cover.
June 11 - June 17, 2015

For this week, look at the books in your library, bookstore or Goodreads suggestions. You'll see this cover, beautiful, intriguing or appealing, and it will be your book. Don't read the summary, don't read the reviews, just add it to your plan.

How to Create a Topic:
1. Create a topic in the appropriate folder using your book's author and title (Title by Author, please). Link your book with the "This topic is about" feature.

2. In the body of your post, comment about why you chose this book. Have you read it before? What are your expectations?

3. Feel free to use the thread as a way to update the group on your progress. Also, when you are finished reading, add a small review and your thoughts about the week's challenge.

4. Comment on everyone else's posts as well! Participation and group involvement will make this challenge so much fun!

**If you chose the same book as another group member for the same week, do not create a duplicate thread.**

No suggestions this week, there are plenty of interesting covers everywhere :)

152301 I'm over 50%, the pacing is a bit better. The story is interesting and I'm really curious about the magic source and what happened in the past.

I'm starting to like Raoden, but Sarene is a bit too much successful for my tastes.
I agree, Hrathen is compelling, it's amazing how my view of him evolved since the beginning of the book. I'm really curious about what will happen to him in the next chapters :)

152301 Published in 1909. It's a big classic, I often see Wizard of Oz references in books but sometimes I fall on Phantom ones, so I'm curious about the full story. I think I saw a movie about it when I was way younger, but I'm not sure.

Summary:
"The Phantom of the Opera" is a riveting story that revolves around the young, Swedish Christine Daaé. Her father, a famous musician, dies, and she is raised in the Paris Opera House with his dying promise of a protective angel of music to guide her. After a time at the opera house, she begins hearing a voice, who eventually teaches her how to sing beautifully. All goes well until Christine's childhood friend Raoul comes to visit his parents, who are patrons of the opera, and he sees Christine when she begins successfully singing on the stage."

152301 Great! I'll read it for the color week :)

152301 I liked Frankestein but couldn't finish Dracula (I think I read something like 100 pages, it was too slow paced for me).
I'd a serious problem with the hero, because it was obvious that Dracula was a vampire and he didn't see it :p

152301 I read this some years ago and found it ok (I liked the mystery and the "historical" stuff). However, I didn't see why so much hype :p

152301 You'll tell me if you like the different books :)
I'm looking at this since months and can't decide to read it. My friends mostly found it really average, but I like dystopias so I'm interested in discovering it.

152301 I read this some weeks ago and enjoyed it. It's very well done for an "old" book and it was nice to discover the beginning of time travel!

152301 Welcome Ed :)

Each week, we add a "Progress Post" so you can post your opinion on the book you read for this week. And of course, you can join a discussion about your book or open a new thread if there isn't already one.
The plans are a good way to track your progress, so it's highly recommended to create your own (and put it in your bookmarks).

152301 Debra, thanks for the edit ;)

152301 I've to try one! Thanks.

152301 Oh, Tarzan. I never read the books but was a big follower of the tv show when I was young.
How are the stories? :)
Movies vs. Books (33 new)

152301 I finally watched Maze Runner and found it a little better than the book. The characters are a lot more friendly, but they stay shallow and were not more likable for me. It's more fast paced, but in the book finding the code was more complicated.
I really liked the maze design and the music was good, so I'll continue the story (I'm curious) with the movies.

152301 We are halfway done with Week 15, a good week to discover the 1st book written by a popular author.

This discussion thread is solely for your progress (book discussions go in individual threads).

What did you read this week?

Did you read a book from this author before?

What was the most impressive point, from a 1st book point of view? (examples: multi dimensional characters, unusual story, good writing...)

Did you enjoy the book? Would you recommend it?

152301 I'm at 20% only, I started my book for the next week and could not put it down, so I'm late for this (big) one.

It's a bit too slow for my tastes, but the mystery around Elantris is interesting and I'm curious about what will happen! I think at the end I'll like more the ideas than the characters who lack depth (but we'll see).

152301 Yes, a cooking book is non fiction :)

152301 I close this one, join the other thread discussion :)
