Choosing one book...ha! Thank god we’re adults and can do whatever we want. I got it down to 6 then Lucy reminded me of The Sparrow. So seven. The other six are The Handmaid’s Tale, Hyperbole and a Half, Ancillary Justice, World War Z, Consider the Lobster (that was this group right?!), and Packing for Mars. This group has been and IS awesome, and I’m truly viewing this as an adjustment to the “new” group rather than an end to this one. Here’s to the next 5 years.
Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow! Kim is the bringer of snacks. Teresa and Vera, can one of you take December for snacks? I can’t remember who did July...I’ll bring my computer to call Kenny. And the baby will be with me so might need some extra hands for him. Teresa and/or Vera, I think I will drive with the baby and the cold so let me know if you want me to pick you up.
Thanks, Zach!I’m excited! I’m fine leaving the Goodreads discussion here or starting a new one—makes no difference to me.
We still have “Girl Waits with Gun” on November 11/8 as well as December so hope to see everyone on those dates.
I bet Zack will start another group since it’s a different name/focus. I would email him titles because he might have already finalized.
I’ll see everyone tonight. The looming hurricane had such a strong presence in the book. Such a small, focused, sad, beautiful slice of life.
I hope she’s doing OK, Cheryl. I hope the remainder at the meeting was OK! I liked a lot of the book, but, as most of us seemed to agree, it was too long. It’s an interesting concept—things changing around a certain event but I thought the “science” of it came through more weakly than the philosophy of it. The treatment of technology was most interesting. The examination of race was welcome but also not as deep.
Did any good questions or answers come up tonight?
I have two kids that need to be in two different places tomorrow and a husband out of town. I don’t think I can make this all work. Can anyone call Kenny on Skype or Gmail? I obviously don’t want him to miss the discussion of his book choice!
I finished and there was a lot to like, but...yes, it could have been 100-200 pages shorter and gotten all its points across. Reminded me of the movie Sliding Doors—not with the philosophy and science (which I think he explores fairly well) but the “change one thing, change everything” situation.
I’m really enjoying it so far. Really hits my X-ennial anxieties and experiences on the nose 20% in.
I finished! We meet tonight at the library at 630. We should be back in the auditorium but if not...we’ll be in some other room 😄 Lori is on snack duty. See y’all tonight!
