I was definitely wondering that same thing, Donna. It was an interesting omission.

Of course I have to connect my love of books to my love of podcasts: I just finished this episode of Heavyweight about a girl who was bullied so mercilessly that she changed schools. Soon thereafter, her tormentors (former friends) knocked on her door and she was too scared to answer. The episode explores her feelings and experiences then and now as she reaches out to these girls (women) she hasn't spoken to in 20 years. She says she was ashamed of herself for not opening the door. That feeling was so powerful that THAT is what lingered--not sadness or anger or uncertainty. Shame.
I pray that I can teach my children to be kind and stand up for themselves and anyone else being treated badly. You never know how directly or indirectly your actions, kind or otherwise, can affect those around you so you might as well choose kindness.

I can't make it. Had a long, busy weekend and need some recovery time. Enjoy and see you Wednesday!

I like it except for the way he writes for/about his female characters. Fashion goes out the window when working around the clock? Sloppy ponytail? "Um...I have an engineering degree and work at NASA but um I'm super um scared to formulate complete um sentences."

I'd love to watch the movie with the group but I'm crazy busy until a big fundraiser I help with on 11/6. I should definitely be able to finish the book and might squeeze in a background viewing of the movie but it'll be at weird hours. Looking forward to reading and watching and discussing!

Weston! Fireball!!! YAAAAAASSSSS!

Can you post the list and dates once finalized? Gotta input!

Or we could move July to Sept and do Sci-Fi July!

You know Slaughterhouse Five is one of my faves...

I'm hoping to walk up with the boys for some period of time between 6 and 7. Fingers crossed!

Only one I've read before--looking forward to it!

Sounds fun! Maybe next year... #bannedbooks

Hahaha. Points taken. Listen to the Surprisingly Awesome podcast if you want to hear seemingly boring things made interesting.

The NPR book concierge is an amazing rabbit hole to fall down...here's the comic/graphic novel filter from 2015. Thing Explainer maybe? Have fun playing!

Yay! Excited about those two choices so far--I have Modern Romance but haven't read it yet.
And looking forward to planning better for myself for SciFi July. Full disclosure: two of my other library friends had an FB group and a bingo card for SciFi July this year. I'm happy to share that stuff too when we get there...in 11 months.
Other suggestions...
The Three-Body Problem (Hugo winner 2015)
Something by China Mieville?
Other Hugo winners?

Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?

Definitely come! You'll get some spoilers but we love having new people.

It definitely made me do a double take--I was like "I thought this was by a woman" and checked the cover. Then I'm like "wow gender norm much!" I don't question when a man writes about or as a woman but if a woman writes as a man...face palm for myself.
This book was so weird...but I did like it. I didn't love it and don't know if I'd recommend it to many but I laughed out loud several times. Definitely an interesting read!

"Not reading the comments" is a pretty standard survival tactic on social media. And hiding people that post dumb pics etc is pretty easy. Social media allows me to stay connected with friends and family and helps curate my news intake. Yes it can decrease productivity if you let it or hide in it but it's a pretty powerful tool for good as well. See response to Brock Turner verdict as a current example. I'm not saying civilization isn't hurtling towards the abyss but I don't lay even a large amount of blame for this at the foot of social media. Just look at GoodReads and how it has changed the/my experience of reading.

I read 6 months ago...just need to refresh my memory before Wednesday. And then need to find time to read other titles by him...
