Just heard about the Elizabeth Moss movie in the works--Hulu does good stuff so hopefully they do it justice. Margaret Atwood is one of my favorites so looking forward to discussing! I'm thinking canned pears for snack...

Hashtag truth. Reminds me of a Hillary quote I just heard (paraphrased): Diplomacy would be easy if we only had to talk to our friends.

I had trouble identifying with anyone because I felt like each backstory was very...sparse. I wanted more character and world building in general. See everyone tonight!

So...I liked it but didn't love it. It kept me reading but also annoyed me and I'm still formulating why that is--though some one and two star goodreads reviews get at my general discomfort! Looking forward to the discussion.

I'm almost done with Mercy--and agree that Translator Zeiat is hilarious. I'll chime in again when I finish!

I can't wait to start reading but I have to or I'll forget everything. You've got me in suspense.

Got to a scene in the 2nd book with a bridge over a lake in a garden where fish feed greedily when pellets are dropped in the water--my thought "oh, that's a lot like our Botanical Garden." My next thought: "uh...that probably IS our Botanical Garden." Or the inspiration anyway. Ha!

But also...I think Breq/Justice of Toren One Esk might be demonstrating that maybe some innate qualities or characteristics (love of music, loyalty) ARE maintained or developed in this state or in conjunction with their AI. Is how they/she was/is a product of who she was before being turned into an ancillary? I think Strigan kind of asks that of Breq.

The ancillaries, in the Radch, didn't choose though. They're just people conquered during annexations before everyone was "turned into" Radchaai/citizens. That's one reason they've stopped making them--the moral problems with doing so. Yes--ancillaries (99.9999%) do exactly as they are told and don't commit atrocities or exhibit laziness like humans but they are essentially well-behaved zombies (minus the brain eating).

*I think* and now I know.

It is the think. Yes--February.

David: I caught up to your confusion regarding the potentially incestuous son of Estraven and his brother. I felt like Genly made a leap and I didn't quite follow it--though the son at Estre was clearly different from the two with Ash.
Also, great points, Justin. I laughed out loud at the line about being naked vs. without papers. Your compatriots will clothe you, but if you can't demonstrate your identity and status...uh oh.
Great choice--I loved reading another sci fi book with a female author. It's getting to be a favorite (sub?)genre of mine.

Some Le Guin references and something to whet your appetite for Leckie's Imperial Radch trilogy.

Welcome, newbies! I'm Anne and I think Kenny would consider me an original member of this book club. I'm in two others and try to read a book a week while having a full time job and two kids (and a husband). I love the mix of genres in this group as well as the use of technology in our physical meetings. Hope to meet you soon! #yaylibraries

I'm sorry I missed you all tonight--only got to page 38 but I like it. I will see everyone on a couple weeks hopefully with both books finished!

Haven't started yet but hope I get into it. I can do the movie Monday 8/31 or Thursday 9/3. Out of town now and need to see my babies this weekend!

The movie is out and coming soon to Frontenac and the Tivoli so I think we can wait until your back from Michigan, Lucy. Maybe it will be there by the weekend of 8/15.

I'd be fine with dinner and movie. Maybe matinee movie followed by dinner so we can talk about both?
