I just haven’t gone by to ask. I’m sure if you call or stop by they’ll be totally OK with it. My neighbor John said there are some neighborhood/block groups that meet there and I know a podcast club met there. I’m starting a new job next week so if you can get in touch, I’m sure it’ll work. It’s also closer to the nonmetered parking on McPherson.

Read Harder has a few categories that ask for scifi or into which scifi could fit—and definitely non-fiction (nature, social science etc). I like both trying to find things I already wanted to read that fit the categories (like from book club/s) and having the guidance to push myself to read things I normally wouldn’t (poetry, romance).

I’ve got two to go for Read Harder 2017 (micropress and poetry translation—did we read one of those?!?!). For total books (goal is 52), I don’t think I’ll quite make it. I think I’m at 47. Might just read some comics to knock it out! Looking forward to planning and executing Read Harder 2018.

I found this good list—several of which we’ve read. Good picks for 2018 and beyond!

I think that’s the right word but they’re pretty great people so I’m ok with it. I read the book earlier this year so rewatched the movie for our discussion. My team at work is also doing a movie club and a Hidden Figures was chosen for that too fortuitously!
I’m bringing cheese and crackers and salami and probably something sweet.

Ha. I just had the same thought. This is for Wednesday, 12/13. Desserts are always welcome.

Correct—library potluck for 12/16. We discuss the book and THE FUTURE.

The Vino Gallery would likely be amenable if we buy a couple bottles of wine. They might even let us BYO snacks. They also have a projector and WiFi and tech set up.
Dressels’ and Llywelyn’s also are probably quiet and chill enough. Not sure about WiFi though. Both have upstairs rooms as well. And patios in the summer!

So sorry to hear about your brother Lucy and I wish him and you and your family as much peace as is possible. We'll be thinking about you.

Anyone planning on going to one or more bookfeststl.com events? I might go to the YA Panel, will be at one or both LitFic panels, will definitely be at the sci if Panel, and will hopefully go to the TS Eliot performance to round out the day. I hope to see some of you there!
The author of Mr. Penumbra's 24 Bookstore and the Imperial Radche trilogy (Ancillary etc) will be presenting at their various panels.

Hey all! Just realized I hadn't posted about my absence--sorry to miss everyone. But (1) I didn't read the book because I couldn't get into it--contemporary non-fic is a bit challenging these days--and (2) today is Evan's 8th birthday and (3) John's out of town. The odds were not in my favor. I hope it went well and I'll be by to get next month's book.
Also...is anyone planning to attend Bookfest events on 9/23? Ann Leckie is on the sci-fi panel so I'm definitely going to that. I'll also probably hit at least one lit fic session and potentially the TS Eliot performance that evening. Let me know if people want to meet up!

And another one: it's SciFi July! If anyone wants to join the Facebook group, friend me and I'll add you. I'm figuring out my TBR today.

Ann Leckie is supposed to be at the all new Bookfest STL. I signed up for updates--book club weekend activity?

Ugh. Kenny's comment about "it doesn't get better" might be a killer for me. I don't know that I thought it would get better but...does something happen? Does something get resolved? I'm probably halfway through but can't come tomorrow night (Cards' game with Evan's baseball team). I marked some commentary that was kind of interesting or pointed but...it does just feel like sour grapes and also I GET IT YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR WAY TO SAY WHETHER SOMEONE IS BLACK OR BROWN OR WHITE. I found the description of the construct of race interesting the first time around...the 53rd time he used it less so. Maybe that's my privilege showing. And the writing style ain't Kurt Vonnegut. KV never annoys me with his weirdness.

Oooo. Vonnegut is my favorite. That's a good comparison!

Hey Donna--
I think everyone met last week so don't go tonight! I didn't make it last week either so I'm sad I missed the cake. What is our next book? I'll swing by soon to pick it up.

I'm on treats though I didn't think we could drink at the library...
Hope to see everyone tonight at 7pm!

I'm a bit into the book and it calls to mind a few podcasts I've listened to recently.
The entire DTR podcast (Define the Relationship) by Gimlet media is about this modern dating stuff. I just finished the first season.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/d...I especially recommend the episode "Unexpected Places."
I also just listened to the Operation Match episode of the Undone podcast which is about one of the computer matching services in the 60s. Good stuff.

Not to get all political up in here but people asked...
Here's the women's March info for St. Louis.
http://womensmarchonstlouis.weebly.com/I would like to take Evan--likely via Metrolink--so maybe I'll see some of you there. Or if you want to coordinate further, feel free to email me at anne.pennick@gmail.com.

I've never read Douglas Adams...I don't think. So there ya go.
My favorites from this book club were the Imperial Radch (Ancillary) trilogy, Nimona, and Fun Home.
From other corners of my reading world...Challenger Deep, Citizen: An American Lyric, Bad Feminist, Dead Wake, The Graveyard Book, Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking, and Yes, Please.
I'm organizing my
Book Riot 2017 Read Harder Challenge right now--join me if you like!
