I managed to read books 1 & 2 of the Fitz & the Fool trilogy, both doorstoppers. I also got a good start on #3. It's really good - Robin Hobb in top form!

Renee wrote: "I'd live to hear a recommendation on where to start with Robin Hobb, Badlydone."Renee, I just saw this question. Definitely start with Assassin's Apprentice, and then follow the publication order of the rest of her trilogies.
There are two different series tracks that you could read separately but they do inform each other, so reading them in publication order gives you the best understanding of what's going on. See Realms of the Elderlings for the reading order.
I finished Fool's Assassin at 688 pgs. It honestly didn't feel that long, which tells me it was good.

I'm going to read as much of the Fitz & the Fool trilogy that I can. Each book is a doorstopper. Since I'm on vacation, I might be able to finish it before I go back to work next week. I'm almost halfway through Fool's Assassin now.

That does sound gothic-ish :)
Jenny, I'm not sure. I've never seen Edith Wharton on any of the gothic lists, and no one has tagged the novella as gothic.
Thanks for the education suggestions Linda & Renee. I'll look into those. I wasn't thinking about governesses - that widens the field quite a bit!
Hey Michael, you should ask this in the buddy read thread where more people might see it. (Scroll down on the group homepage to find the buddy reads folder.) Also remember to join the Doorstopper challenge, which is for books 600-1000 pgs.
I've been compiling my reading list and agree - some of these might be hard to know ahead of time. Maybe we can make suggestions for each other before we give up on the main characters, though. Here are a few with medical main characters that I know of:
The Physician
Murder on Astor Place
A Duty To The Dead
The Midwife's Tale
Cutting for Stone
Middlemarch
Does anyone have suggestions for education?
