118012 I know what you mean, Anna - I used to get a stack of books from the library every week! And yet I'm pretty sure I had a childhood somehow, haha! There must have been more hours in the day back then. ;)

118012 Kerri!! Yay!! Welcome. :D

118012 Good luck, Tara! I'm sure you'll find a lot of recommendations for classics and other genres around here. :)

I'm still hoping I can complete my 2013 goal before the 2014 one starts, haha!

I'm not sure when the new one goes up - I would have thought it would go by your own time zone, if you have it selected, but if not then probably by US time.

Thanks, Kassandra!

I'll definitely be reading Berlin Alexanderplatz, Memoirs of Hadrian, and Things Fall Apart, because I already have those here. I hope to read Ulysses, Buddenbrooks, The Magic Mountain, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Kafka, Henrik Ibsen, Hans Christian Anderson, Hunger, In Search of Lost Time, and the Samuel Beckett series that's on the list. Beyond that, I'm not sure yet. :)

118012 That's great, Lisa and Rose! I love reviewing what I read, and I've done that for every book I've read over the last few years, though I don't always post them for the public to read. Even if it's just a simple "loved it" or "didn't like it," it comes in handy for me when I'm looking back months or years later.

118012 From what I've heard, knowing the story of The Odyssey would probably help, since it's kind of a modern retelling.

I certainly won't get around to reading this in January, but I might try for February.
118012 Welcome, Carmen! :)

118012 In looking over all the goals individual members of this group have been setting, I think we can easily reach 5,000 books as a group if we all put in a good effort!

(Edit: Since we're all doing so well, I've changed the goal to 10,000!)

So, here's the plan - I won't ask that everybody post here every time they finish a book, because that would make this thread fly completely out of control and become thousands of posts long! But at the end of each month, I'll bump the thread (post in it so it rises to the top of the list in this folder), and call on everyone to post their tally of books for the month. Then I'll count up the numbers and see how many books we've read as a group.

(Edit: This thread is crazy after just one month, so I've changed the plan a bit - I'll open a fresh thread each month to post the previous month's numbers in, and keep this thread around for conversation and questions about the goal.)

By the end of the year, if we've reached 5,000 (edit: 10,000!) books... well, let's just say there'll be a little thank-you gift for everyone who has contributed. :)

So, at the stroke of midnight tonight, it's time to get reading! Every book you complete within the year 2014 will count. Good luck, everyone, and happy reading! :)

118012 I know, it's annoying when some authors get paid and published for their fanfiction, yet others get looked down on or overlooked entirely for theirs. Kind of a double standard.

118012 Okay, I know for sure what I'm reading in January now, because I raided the library and there is now a huge stack of books on my shelf. ;)

The Book Thief
The Island of Dr. Moreau
Rebecca
Ithaca
Barchester Towers
The Zookeeper's Wife
The Dead Secret
The Custodian of Paradise

LOL Good question... DOES fanfiction count? Maybe we should open that up for debate. ;)

118012 Last day of 2013!!! Wow, that went by fast! How has everyone done with their 2013 goals?

Good for you, Geoff, for exceeding yours!

I still have 5 more books to finish today to meet my goal of 104, which is technically not impossible, but will depend entirely upon the presence or lack of interruptions, haha.

118012 I had months like that this year, too, Jamila. I'm not letting myself make any excuses in 2014!

Of course you can! This will be going on all year, so anyone can jump in whenever they like. :)
