118012 Wow, I'm not familiar with most of these books, haha!

I tell you what - as this is a challenge and not a contest, it doesn't really matter if a book fits perfectly into the genre or not, as long as everybody is reading something that they enjoy and/or are learning from. If you use your own judgment and decide that something can be considered historical, then go ahead and include it. It's not really a cut-and-dried genre like some of the others will be, like say non-fiction or Young Adult. We'll let you have significant wiggle room for this one. :)

YES! That's what I tell people, too.

Ohhhh yeah, look at that! You can see how many books people have read! *plays with new toy*

Not at all, I do it all the time!

I agree. The thing about The Great Gatsby is, it seems historical now but was actually contemporary when it was written.

Sorry to hear you've been having personal issues. Welcome back!

So you need suggestions for books that it seems everyone has read?

118012 Looks like you'll have a great year! I plan on reading quite a few of those myself. :)

118012 Thanks, Bouchra!

Amber, I'm reading The Island of Dr. Moreau first, which counts towards the 30 books from my to-read list.

I'm not sure about that one - they do talk about World War 1, but in the past tense, and there isn't much else about it that's historical.

I'd say yes, a biography can count as historical if it's about a historical figure. :)

Non-fiction is one of the monthly genres, which will include biographies, but non-fiction books can be read for any of the genres if you can make them fit elsewhere.

INFINITE JEST!!! I love that book. :D

118012 Yay! I'm so glad so many of you are on board with this! :D

Let's have a great reading year, people! Good luck to all!

118012 Yes, anything that has anything to do with anything historical could count for this challenge. It doesn't have to be specifically "historical fiction" or a non-fiction history book.

That is so cool, Shreya! I always wanted to learn more about Russia and read Russian books, ever since I was about 6 and was in a Christmas play at my school about Babushka. I had so much fun saying "Babushka" over and over and driving everyone crazy, haha! It was such a fun word to say!

I only started reading Russian literature as an adult, but now that I'm studying the language, I hope to read some children's literature in its original Russian.

118012 Well, it's past midnight where I am, and I didn't quite meet my 2013 goal... but then again, I did shoot pretty high with a goal of 104! I officially read 102 books in 2013.

Bring it on, 2014! I'm ready!
