Oh, that's so true! I used to underestimate the power of translation, but it makes such a difference!

Looks great, Everyone!
If you're new to the group, feel free to post your totals from January!

Great to have you join us!

Yes, Heather, I agree with what you've said. I'm eager to see what happens next!

Lol. It was actually mostly about the people. Immigrants who came to the US looking for opportunity and finding graft and deceit and unfairness. Also, really bad food. It was a fascinating look at turn-of-the-century practices... From afar.

Definitely. (And another for my TBR!)

Lol. Already 3 choices that are headed for my TBR.

Welcome! There's a 50 Book Challenge going in the Year Long Challenge folder. You can post your number-completed-in-January there. :D

30 books in one month is pretty impressive even if you're "storing up for winter."

Some members are opting to update "placeholder" posts. If you want to see some of the impressive reads just scroll back to the beginning of this tread. :)

It's time to share your totals for January!!
How many books did you finish and what is your total-to-date?
(You can post January Totals until the end of February, at which point we will start posting February Totals.)

Just a few chapters ahead. I expect to be finishing Volume 1, Book 7, Ch. 4 at the end of February.

Mission: Read one book in February which celebrates the African-American experience or discusses the African Diaspora. The book you choose does not have to address civil or human rights issues, although that topic is welcome. Last year, I chose a romance written by an African-American and a novel about the struggles of an inner city teen. The year before I think I read
Twelve Years a Slave.
In doing a little research I discovered that Black History Month is has an annual observation in the United States, Canada (in Feb) and the United Kingdom (in Oct). I also believe there are celebrations in Germany as well. I'm including some Wikipedea links below for anyone who might wish to explore the history a bit more...

I hope I don't make anyone hyperventilate, but I've posted a breakdown of chapters per book in my opening post for reference.

IF you're on track, you've finished Books 1 and 2 of Volume 1 (Fantine) and your goal for February is to read about 28 chapters which will put you close to the end of Volume 1. No matter where you are in your reading, Volume 1 will be "fair game" for open discussion in February.
