Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

On phone it looks good, but on desktop it doesn't look that pleasing to the eyes.

Don't be rude or condescending just because you like what you see. Other people have issues that you are not having. More than 1,300 people have commented and I seriously doubt anyone is just trying to be bitchy.

I think it's that the font looks quite old-fashioned-type-writer-y (complete with weird kerning). It's probably meant to look sophisticated and literary. And to be fair, it would probably look really nice in a book. But this isn't a book - books don't glow white, for a start, which means that different fonts are appropriate.
I like the new look, I just wish you'd gone with the green colour of old links and "Want to read" button, rather than the chosen teal. It's bland and a bit too light to be completely comfortable to read. Apart from that, thumbs up!
Ok, the longer I'm on here, the more glaring the background it getting. This is not good. I can spend hours on here sometimes, but that's unlikely to remain the case if this isn't fixed. Also, didn't realize the color coding for links was removed and now they're just bold? Terrible idea.
Please revert back to the way it was before.

Thank you, Lobstergirl. I completely agree with you.
You can't please everyone, but I happen to like the changes. I find it much easier to read and faster to find what I'm looking for and group pages and other areas.
I'm also seeing some sort of blue line/dots across the stars. My star rating and the overall star ratings are different colours now?

I can actually handle all kinds of fonts when reading a book, and small spacing or a small font aren't issues either, but obviously not everything works when you transfer it to a computer screen.
Linda ~ marzipan in your pie plate ~ wrote: "Also, didn't realize the color coding for links was removed and now they're just bold? it's really nice even though i'm not sure i like the greenish/blueish color of the linkseverything else is super cool and cute and awesome
This new look is terrible. My eyesight is not so great and this font is hard on my eyes. Why did you have to go and ruin a good thing?!?

I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but that is comparing apples to oranges. One focuses on the digital universe, while this focuses on the written word, in all it's lovely variations.
Within those variations, there is much consistency, and I would be willing to wager that most who are opposed to this change (myself included) prefer traditional books, and as such, consistency over change.
Some see it is whining and complaining, others as voicing their opinion freely.
There is a reason this was my only social media choice. Mainly, it was unlike the other sites. The changes make this site appear sterile and unfriendly in its attempt to become modern and connected with other social media.
So, while you are comfortable with the changes, please understand that not everyone is. It is not about slavery, or expecting anyone to cater to a single opinion, but rather the adaption of a community unaccustomed to change.
The Merriweather font makes my eyes hurt. I think it'd look really pretty in an ebook, but it just doesn't work for website.
I strongly dislike the new flat buttons. The site didn't bother me before and I dislike change for the sake of change, so the change of link color is also bothering me. And the font is a little bit small in some places.
I'll have to get used to it but I think I like........or at least I will. Right now I'm just processing XD
I like it , the only thing that I don't like is when editing an old comment you can only drag it down to make it bigger instead of across. But everything else looks nice.

I do understand people who do not like it/have trouble with it, and I'm 100% in favor of them voicing those. The only thing I'm complaining about is people who are being rude while doing so.
If I was mentioning Tumblr in particular (aside from the fact that @Syc did so), it's because over there, it's like... a common thing to be rude/impolite (it makes you popular sometimes, what I still don't get after years using it), while I thought it was different here, because, like you said, different profiles.

The font is too fine and too difficult to read. Also the strange greenish tint is off-putting. Did it need changing just for the sake of change?
Manray9 wrote: "Did it need changing just for the sake of change?"Yes. Isn't that the essence of all website design?
mehhhh i don't like this. the font is hard to read, i prefer the old one, and the link color is just strange.

Fn (function key) + F4 on mine. Yours may be slightly different. I found it helps some. Hopefully it helps you as well!
I was already having trouble reading the small print and now its smaller.THE ADS ARE BIGGER THOUGH WHATS WITH THAT or maybe they just look bigger because the print is so much smaller.
I just joined a few days ago but now not sure I'll stay

I just looked at the descriptions on Goodreads using the new font, and I had an instant headache!
Mirabelle wrote: "[insert melodramatic overreaction to change here]"You win the thread for that comment - spot on!
It's true that it will be harder for many to read because we've become accustomed to serifs in our books, papers, etc. For years "those in the so-called know" have said it's easier on the eyes, which may be true in some instances but I think a website can adapt nicely and I happen to like the changes. I don't think the font is really smaller, but with the cleaner sans serif look many will think it is. I really like the clean look of the "My Books" page, sometimes the serifs have a tendency to add bulk to a large page. Now, if you will add the ability to post a book I've listed as read to a challenge thread....well, I will bow down to the techie gurus.....hehehe
New bug: when you compare books with someone and they have written a review, the star indicating the review is above and to the right of their stars instead of at bottom left. It's also so small it looks like a microspeck of dust. I mean really, if you don't know it's there, you would never see it. (And I'm at 110% magnification.)
Some profiles aren't showing the countries the user is from. Mine only has the city I live in, which is pretty unhelpful to users not familiar with Finnish geography.Edit. Checked the "compare books" section and the dot indicating a user's review is ridiculously small. It was bad before, but now it's practically indistinguishable.
Compared to the "old" font, this one is grey, more dull than the previous sharp black. I find myself squinting when I read it.
Hyperlinks need to be underlined like they used to be. The bluish/greenish font is blending in with the black font on a review.
I've clicked around a bit to try to get accustomed to the changes... and the fonts are very difficult to read. I've already increased my font size twice, but it didn't help much at all. Both fonts, in all colors, remain difficult to read to the point that I've been squinting at the screen. Granted, I do wear glasses, but my vision isn't this bad. I think if a change needed to be made, better choices should also have been made.
