Did You Notice Something a Little Different?

Posted by Maryana Pinchuk on December 15, 2015
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.

If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.

What’s different?

  • To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.

  • To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.

  • To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.
  • Before:

    After:

Our approach was simple: Improve the usability of the site and give it a cleaner, more modern look, while preserving the familiar feel of Goodreads—a unique home for readers.

Let us know what you think!

Karen I love the new look. I think it is much easier to see everything.

Tracy Kellies It was a shock to my eyes at first but now I am actually liking the new font.

    message 1403: by Emma (new)

Emma I like the new design ,crisp and fresh, especially the new green colour. However I can see how the front could irritate some.

    message 1404: by Alisa (new)

Alisa No bluriness here, but I think the font is really unattractive and more difficult to read. Not such a great sign for a site focused on reading...

Katharine (Ventureadlaxre) It looks absolutely awful.

    message 1406: by Valerie (new)

Valerie This is harder for me to read than the old layout. :\

    message 1407: by Alexandria (new)

Alexandria I wanted to like this so badly, but I really miss the old layout. It just feels like there is too much going on now on my homepage and I'm finding it difficult to read everything from everyone down my feed.

    message 1408: by AnnMarie (new)

AnnMarie Horrible, the font is horrendous on the eyes causing me to squint when I never had to before. It's also smaller. I am squinting now typing this.

You really should preview and feedback before doing things like this.

    message 1409: by Shveta (new)

Shveta Thakrar Fonts with serifs are always more pleasant to read. I prefer the old version.

message 1410: by Kaitlyn (last edited Dec 15, 2015 08:06PM) (new)

Kaitlyn I rarely have issues with reading, unless I read for too long. I've been on here for all of 5 minutes and I already have a headache. And I'm not one that's prone to headaches often. I preferred the old layout, as it was easier to read and didn't cause as many problems.

Please let us have the option of the old layout or this new layout. I will be very upset if I have to stop using goodreads altogether because of something as stupid as this. I'm a member of 4 years and I loved the old font. Never know what you like or appreciate it until it's gone. *sigh*

    message 1411: by Rose (new)

Rose In the words of a They Might Be Giants song - "She's actual size, but she seems much bigger to me. Squares may look distant in her rear view mirror but they're actual size, actual size to her."

In this case, the font might be actual size, but it definitely DOES NOT look bigger to me.

I really hate the way the font looks on the review pages especially. The status updates are very hard to read even at 100%, and I wear glasses. Shelf-names and number of likes on the page are also hard to read.

Plus coming home after long hours of working at a computer with a tendency towards eye strain and coming home to see the super small, awkward font was not a pleasant sight to see. Please, please, please make adjustments.

I wish Goodreads would have beta testers try out these changes before rolling them out, because that would reduce a lot of headaches (literally and figuratively).

    message 1412: by B (new)

B Everything is blurry to me. I prefer the old version. Give users an option. I really, really dislike this update!

    message 1413: by Katherine (new)

Katherine I'm more concerned about the horrible search feature on this site.

    message 1414: by Darcey (new)

Darcey I find the new font very difficult to read as I don't have perfect eyesight. I know you state your intentions were accessibility, but I'm probably going to have to find a font changing extension to navigate the website. Even typing this is making my eyes feel a little dizzy and blurry. (I also think the new font looks bad without this problem.)

    message 1415: by Denise (new)

Denise Hallauer Omg these fonts suck. Please change them back. They are NOT easier to read they are actually HARDER to read. There is NOTHING wrong with good old Times New Roman and Arial.

Danielle (Danniegurl) Leo wrote: "The font doesn't bother me too much, but the site has gotten brighter. It's like everything became bleached, I thought there was something wrong with my computer brightness settings for a moment. I..."

I literally just did this, I also thought the background *might* have been changed but idk earlier I was on and it was during daylight hours and now it's night so the room has different light so I'm unsure if that changed either way I had to turn down brightness right now. I just got rid of my headache I don't want it back. Definitely makes my eyes have issues.

    message 1417: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Curry I don't like the font. It bothers my eyes!

    message 1418: by Simply (new)

Simply I really can't read it - the font is hard to read. The touch ups on the layout are OK, but I miss the softer look of the site overall. Is there a way to get around the update?

    message 1419: by Lisa (new)

Lisa These fonts are definitely harder to read and I agree that everything is blurry now when I had no problems before. This style serif font is really hard for me to read (in general, there are similar style serifs out there and I stay far away from all of them). Personally, I prefer the gradient, but that's probably a change I can live with. The fonts and the bold title links, less so. PLEASE hurry to fix the blur; it really sucks.

    message 1420: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen I'm sorry. I know you're trying to improve the site, but the new font is hard on my eyes. Too narrow, too light. I beg you... please change it back.

    message 1421: by ♥ Ashleigh ♥ (last edited Dec 15, 2015 08:23PM) (new)

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! I really like the change in font. I don't mind if it goes bigger if some people are have difficulties viewing it, but i like the style their using now. Though i wouldn't mind it if went a little darker, tad bright, hurting my eyes a little after a while. overall not bad.

    message 1422: by Lena (new)

Lena I like it. I think its easier to read.

    message 1423: by Susan (new)

Susan Anyone know what the old font was?

    message 1424: by Cyndi (new)

Cyndi I am so loving this new look. So much easier to read and makes everything look so much cleaner

    message 1425: by Stirling (new)

Stirling It's so bright and sharp . . . not at all soft or warm.

    message 1426: by Rachel (new)

Rachel into the Void I hate all of it, most of all the ugly font.

    message 1427: by J (new)

    i understand

    message 1430: by Mike (new)

Mike Finn The site looks cleaner but the fonts are too thin to be comfortable, especially on my phone. What's wrong with using something like Calibri?

    message 1431: by Heather (new)

Heather I don't know what updates you did, but it's still ridiculously blurry. Just reading through these comments gives me eye strain. And why are some text (the books titles on the feed) like 18pt and bold and other fonts on the same page (like the Currently Reading section of the front page) like 6pt? How is that at all helpful? I love GoodReads, but I can't keep coming on here if it is *literally* going to be a headache. No joke, my eye actually hurt now. This was a bad, bad change.

Danielle (Danniegurl) Someone just needs to make a browser extension for FF and Chrome where it turns GRs into the "old" format and we can just override it until everything is fixed. Can any one do that lolololol.

    message 1433: by Bianca (new)

Bianca I like it, it looks cleaner.

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ I actually like the cleaner look to it. I like the new look

    message 1435: by Chava (new)

Chava LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Thank you!! It is so much nicer on my laptop to get through GR now. I haven't really experienced a change on OS though

    message 1436: by Nat (new)

Nat I like it, it's not that different, and I kind of like the font. I still think they should add half star ratings, though :p

    message 1437: by Adorkor!!! (new)

Adorkor!!! I am in love it looks amazing and more modern the other one was very blurry.

    message 1438: by Alvin (new)

Alvin Talavera I do not like the new font.

I get migraines too, so I'm hoping they'll do something. At least bring the brightness level down on the background. It's super bright.

It's not very accessible to people with certain disabilities or conditions where this is a problem, so it's a huge issue.

message 1440: by Richard (last edited Dec 15, 2015 08:31PM) (new)

Richard One font to rule them all, please, not a random hodge-podge of Serif and sans-Serif styles... I think I've figured out kind of how you're trying to use the difference to distinguish types of content but... Really? :-)

    message 1441: by Heather (new)

Heather Well, thanks to Goodreads, I've discovered a feature of Firefox I didn't know existed: Default font overrides.

    message 1442: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Cook I really don't like the new font. Or the colors. Can there at least be an option to switch it back?

Danielle (Danniegurl) Please go back to the old layout, rework the new layout with various beta testers, and then roll it out. I would have liked to vote "Do you goodreads member want a new layout" or "What would you improve most on the site, look/laytout, content, features, apps" then you'd know where we are really wanting a change. This is a large community and I think the changes should have been talked about BEFORE implementation. It totally came out of left field. I think the color scheme from the previous layout should have been kept. I don't like the margins, they feel squished. Oh and I forgot to mention, I'm on chrome, and I already have my font set to "larger text" AND zoomed 110% I believe AND I still can't see! I've also had to decrease my brightness. IDK what it was if the background is still the same but I NEVER had this issue before, and I DO have an issue with bright white backgrounds, on paper and on screen, for me my left eye over compensates which strained both of my eyes and makes two separate lines of text merge. I'm doing a lot of squinting while I type this too and I recently did just get rid of my headache. I adore goodreads, and I adore using the site, this type of change isn't good due to all the user issues. I've pretty much read the comments through here and it seems maybe 1/20 or so people like the font or the look maybe a bit more. But that still isn't a great ratio. I *want* to like it, but my eyes are not in agreement.

message 1444: by Emilyx (last edited Dec 15, 2015 08:43PM) (new)

Emilyx I appreciate that the Goodreads team is trying to modernize into a more user-friendly design (I love the Lato font), but there are quite a few issues which haven't been fixed in spite of the 1000+ complaints thus far.

The Merriweather font is hard to read because it's thin. On Chrome, it's tolerable (some people even like it). But on Mozilla Firefox version 4.3, it's a mess.

On Firefox, the Merriweather font simply doesn't work.

I noticed that the spacing is off, and the kerning is off following italicized words. The hypens are too high. The lowercase letter "g" extends past the midline. And, most importantly, the thinness of the font varies, making it incredibly blurry to read.

Unless the font characteristics can be tweaked to appear less offensive to the eyes, I'd advise changing the font altogether. This new design seems like a terrible misfire. Props for trying, though.

    message 1445: by Rayna (new)

Rayna The text was actually clearer and sharper before. I agree there should be the option to change it back.

Do you suppose IE has that feature?

    message 1447: by Rose (new)

Chrome has a similar feature via an extension. Since I upgraded...OMG, so much better.

    message 1448: by M'rella (new)

M'rella I don't know what's been done, but the font and its size in the comments improved dramatically on my Chrome. Too bad it's being done one customer at a time.

    message 1449: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Belk I like it ! Easier for me to read.
