Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

I see Finland on your profile.

I see Finland o..."
Ok, that's weird :/ Must be a glitch.

Where are you having this issue? Do you have any screenshots or links to specific pages where you're experiencing this?

Could you send us a couple of examples to support at goodreads dot com? It's best if you don't post them here so that we aren't discussing other users' accounts in a public forum.

And...when typing my reviews, I like how the print is not that funky old Courier 10 font that I had on my Selectric typewriter 40 years ago.
But my biggest complaint is that everything just seem SO small. Maybe it's my age, but I'm having a difficult time with the size of the fonts -- not so much the fonts themselves.
It would be great to have a feature to 'size up' the screens for us old-timers...:)

I'm not sure I like the new look, and I'm not particularly a fan of "modern," but maybe I'll get used to it. Function is most important anyway.
There are probably some tweaks that need to be made. For instance, I often like typefaces with "text figures," i.e., where numbers have different heights and they can look good in the midst of text, and the new style has that... but they're being used in inappropriate places, like in the page numbering: << previous 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 ... 22 23 next >>. Some use of capitalization, or small-caps sometimes doesn't look good in places where the previous version of the site capitalized differently--as seen in the screen caps above, "Recent status updates" became "Recent Status Updates", and "Readers Also Enjoyed" became "READERS ALSO ENJOYED" (in small-caps)).
On the other hand, Merriweather apparently has some nice jazzy question marks and apostrophes.

Any chance you would consider giving those a little more color depth or contrast?

The font appearance on my tablet is slightly better, but the colors are no better, and I don't think it's fair to discriminate against computer users in favor of mobile devices.

It's readable to you maybe, but just because you don't see any problems, doesn't mean others don't have any.

No.

Being able to actually READ the site would be good.
In Opera, everything that is not bolded black or red/orange are various shades of pale fuzzy grey.

You just click on either "page" or "%" and it'll switch to the other one. You don't have to guess.

It definitely needs more tweaking and work on layout.

FF and Edge look much much better. I actually like the new font in those browsers, though my eyes are still hurting after a few minutes of reading. The background white needs to be toned down, whether by changing the color or adding more contrasting colors to the page.
The link text looks the best in Edge. It's crisper and more noticeable as a different color. It blends in FF.
Overall, still not pleased with most of the changes. I reiterate that the header boxes help guide the eye and without them, it's harder to visually navigate the page. The san serif font on my bookshelf page, on the book pages, etc. is too small. Even increasing it by a point would be a huge improvement.
I DO like that the font in the comment/review boxes are no longer Courier.
