Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

I really don't notice any difference. What's the big deal?

I think it looks nice, but it's a bit difficult to read as someone who's visually impaired. The old fonts were much easier for me to read. It'd be nice to have an option.

I like everything else except the font. It's more blurry than before! Everything else is cleaner but the font has to go!

Ok, that's weird :/ Must be a glitch.

Could you send us a couple of examples to support at goodreads dot com? It's best if you don't post them here so that we aren't discussing other users' accounts in a public forum.
Unfortunately the new font makes it really difficult to read and it actually hurts my eyes. Please consider giving users the option to switch or not.
I never like change, so of course I'm not too happy about the new fonts. But it's not like I have a choice, or that GR will switch back.And...when typing my reviews, I like how the print is not that funky old Courier 10 font that I had on my Selectric typewriter 40 years ago.
But my biggest complaint is that everything just seem SO small. Maybe it's my age, but I'm having a difficult time with the size of the fonts -- not so much the fonts themselves.
It would be great to have a feature to 'size up' the screens for us old-timers...:)
Oddly, the new serif font might be more "readable" at small point size, and may look nice in large, heavy type (bold), but in medium size, whatever it's doing in terms of hinting makes it seem less pleasant to read. And I'm not sure the overall redesign, including colors and style decisions is quite as nice.I'm not sure I like the new look, and I'm not particularly a fan of "modern," but maybe I'll get used to it. Function is most important anyway.
There are probably some tweaks that need to be made. For instance, I often like typefaces with "text figures," i.e., where numbers have different heights and they can look good in the midst of text, and the new style has that... but they're being used in inappropriate places, like in the page numbering: << previous 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 ... 22 23 next >>. Some use of capitalization, or small-caps sometimes doesn't look good in places where the previous version of the site capitalized differently--as seen in the screen caps above, "Recent status updates" became "Recent Status Updates", and "Readers Also Enjoyed" became "READERS ALSO ENJOYED" (in small-caps)).
On the other hand, Merriweather apparently has some nice jazzy question marks and apostrophes.
Hard to read for those of us with aging eyes. Serif font somehow too elaborate and teal doesn't show up as well as green . I dislike this change!
I actually like the font change, but the section break background colors are nearly nonexistent. Those really helped direct the eye (especially in groups). On the book summary pages, everything looks lumped together without clear separators. If I were new to GR's and did not know what to look for, it would be extremely confusing. If I reduce the brightness on my screen, it helps with the color contrast, but then it's too dark and I can't read anything (I have vision problems). Any chance you would consider giving those a little more color depth or contrast?
It seems like other white background sites are less bright than this. I debrighted, then went to another site and had to up the brightness a little.
My face at the top right of the page is partly cut off. The picture's too high now with the picture rounded vs square. "Vanity, vanity all is vanity." :)
I do not like the change. (I'm trying to be polite, but really I hate it.) The letters seem to fade wherever they curve. Whatever "issues with blurriness" people may have been having before, I never experienced--until now. Both new fonts look blurry to me. The new colors of the buttons, links, and stars, etc., seem washed out and artificial. Between the faded and fuzzy fonts and the odd colors, I'm getting a headache and eye strain just looking at the site. The entire site looks like someone turned up the brightness setting on my monitor. The font appearance on my tablet is slightly better, but the colors are no better, and I don't think it's fair to discriminate against computer users in favor of mobile devices.
I absolutely love it! I don't get people who are saying this new font is hard to read when it's not?
I'm having SEVERE problems with ads corrupting pretty much every review page I go to. They cause the whole page to flicker and all the links and text on the page disappear, the only way I can get off the page to an uncorrupted one is to press the browser's back button or close the page completely and open a new one.
jus wrote: "I absolutely love it! I don't get people who are saying this new font is hard to read when it's not?"It's readable to you maybe, but just because you don't see any problems, doesn't mean others don't have any.
Of all the terrible 'improvements' you've made to this site over that last couple of years, this font change is in the top five...easy. What are you thinking over there? No.
Why not make the tiny little dot that indicates someone has a review (in the Compare Books feature) even smaller, then I'll just think it is a speck of dust on the screen?
Kevin wrote: "I like the changes. Cleaner and crisper looking. You can't please some folks no matter what you do."Being able to actually READ the site would be good.
In Opera, everything that is not bolded black or red/orange are various shades of pale fuzzy grey.
I like the changes overall, however the font size on the titles of my currently reading books is much too small. Because of the small size and skinny letters it really is hard to read.
The before and after photos presented here don't show the Feed, where the font size is significantly smaller, and much harder to read for any length of time.
Sorry, but I'm not enamored with the new font. I'm sure I will get used to it but I preferred the old font.
Just in case our comments might make a difference ... I think the new fonts are awful. They look grayish, not black, and certain things definitely seem smaller. Overall everything is just harder to read and look at.
Morgan wrote: "I don't like it that now when you are currently reading a book and you update on what page you are on, now you have to guess the percentage instead of just putting the page number in. It is REALLY ..."You just click on either "page" or "%" and it'll switch to the other one. You don't have to guess.
The previous layout and text was easier to read and used to visually standout. The new page layout is too bright and blurs elements together. It definitely needs more tweaking and work on layout.
I like the more modern design style, but have to agree with everyone else: the typeface is very difficult on the eyes.
I find it harder to read and hurts my eyes. It's the shape of the letters. The background seems brighter and the font is too narrow. It's harder to skim.
I opened the site in Chrome, Firefox, and MS Edge (the new IE). It looks the worst in Chrome, my default browser. The font is blurrier, lighter in shade, and the background appears brighter because of the lack of contrast. FF and Edge look much much better. I actually like the new font in those browsers, though my eyes are still hurting after a few minutes of reading. The background white needs to be toned down, whether by changing the color or adding more contrasting colors to the page.
The link text looks the best in Edge. It's crisper and more noticeable as a different color. It blends in FF.
Overall, still not pleased with most of the changes. I reiterate that the header boxes help guide the eye and without them, it's harder to visually navigate the page. The san serif font on my bookshelf page, on the book pages, etc. is too small. Even increasing it by a point would be a huge improvement.
I DO like that the font in the comment/review boxes are no longer Courier.
