Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

Please No! San serif fonts are attractive in small doses for getting attention, but it's boring and a jumble to read. When there are differing sizes, bold and not, the page is so unattractive I don't read it.
Julia wrote: "So aesthetically pleasing."I agree. And here I thought a visit to the ophthalmologist was eminent. Vastly improved.
I mostly like the overall new look, but the blurriness issue definitely hasn't been resolved for me (I am on MacBook Air and use Google Chrome, if that matters); it makes everything very difficult to read. If I had a choice, I'd switch back to the previous design.
I just put IE and Firefox side by side, which I'm guessing you didn't do when you tested this change.IE is much larger than Firefox. The white space is less overpowering and the fonts are bigger. I have to zoom Firefox to get the same effect.
I didn't think anyone optimized for only one browser any more.
The longer I use the Firefox version, the harder I have to squint to use this site.
I am not going to use IE just to come to goodreads.
Please get your tech team to rework this so that it works on all browsers.
And think about increasing the size of the body text so it doesn't feel so cramped.
Is Goodreads getting a kickback from my eye doctor? Because reading this god-awful font is giving me a serious case of the eye-blurs.Please change it back.

This is the thing, tho. Why do I have to install yet another extension because of just one site? My Chrome has enough already and it's getting slower with each add on. And NO I am NOT buying a new laptop or implementing global changes to my programs so I can comfortably read GR reviews.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
edit: but how do I see the italics of quoted parts in comments, that's a feature I don't want to change.....
FOUND IT: Font style unchecked
I looked at it this afternoon on my laptop and found it difficult to read. The font is too small. At least on my android tablet I can enlarge the print. But it gives me a headache. And it may force me to get the glasses that I probably already need.
It looks good while reading small font size but becomes blurry when reading an article (like this one). Please improve your GR app because it sucks...
It's wonderful that you want to make some changes, but sorry, now, It's really difficult to read for people with bad vision ( maybe for anothers too). And as you can understand, Goodreads is place for readers, and it's logically that it's not easy for us. Please try to understand us and put it back.
Can please you make them more readable? darker black please. It's painful to read for long with this fonts.
This change in font puts a real strain on my eyes and I dislike it a great deal. The colour change is also bother some. These are not changes for the better.

@Danielle and Kaitlyn - you are both very welcome! :)
I would rather not have to make this adjustment at all, but at least the font can be customized this way to something less harsh in my browser, and make my eyes less strained. (The brightness of the white background is still a problem unfortunately, among other measures.)
I still like the new look, but after perusing awhile this evening I've noticed the background is brighter and much harsher than before; I don't think changing the fonts to black would be any better and I like the green. I think there would be far less animosity to the change if the background were softer.
The color palette is very pleasing to the eyes. Only issue is with the font. The letters seem to dissolve into themselves.

I like the new color palette. It doesn't clash so hard. :) It's also much cleaner and easier to see for me.Edit: Love how clean it is, but the font seems to shift a little when I go to a new page.

It looks a tad fleeting (like the ink is slowly fading away) but it doesn't, right? So, yeah, in a good way! But hell, where has the 'Preview' gone ???
Ok, so coming back here at the end of the day, I am still feeling (again, as a nearsighted person) the serif font too big on Firefox (v42) - it's more like 13 or 14 px than 12 px, and thus requires more scrolling and eye effort. If I zoom out to 90%, the serif is more comfortable, but then the sans-serif is uber tiny.On Chrome 47, the serif font is still significantly thinner and harder to read than in Firefox and IE. I don't use Chrome, but I've found that Google Web fonts, ironically enough, tend to be less readable on some versions of Chrome than they are in other major browsers. This is probably the source of many complaints on this thread.
Kira wrote: "Goodreads, are you trying to kill my eyesight with that hideous unreadable font?!!"I totally agree with you.
I used to be able to use Goodreads on my laptop without reading glasses, but I am now unable to do so without them. Not a huge deal, but suggests to me that this font is much less clear - which I don't believe was the point?
Oh one more thing; there is hardly any differentiation on a review page of the title, the reader, the rating, recommended for.... and the review content per se. They all run in a one monochrome hue. GR team, please re-introduce your earlier color slabs to make them visually separable.
And, please change the rating color to something dark (purple, brown may be?). Orange doesn't work on a white background. Guys, contrast!!
I admit I haven't had much time to browse the comments, but I immediately noticed the difference in fonts. I personally find the serif font difficult to read; I feel myself squinting and straining my eyes. The sand serif font seems to read fine for me.I'm also one of the "old fashioned" people who hated mobile sites because of the decreased features, so I use the desktop site even when I'm on my phone now. The colors and lack of gradients don't make as much of a difference to me--if by "modern" you were looking for "more like Apple," then I think you've achieved it.
But I do prefer the old fonts =\
Soooo, I'm having issues with goodreads right now. Seriously bad issues. The new font and color scheme has been giving me headaches, nausea and dizziness all day because of my terrible eyesight. If I type with my left eye closed I'm ok, sort of, but as soon as I'm back to two eyes the nausea and dizziness come back. So today has been me trying to find another social media site for book lovers. There isn't one.
I have an account on shelfari but I never use it and I checked again today and it's doesn't do what I really want to use goodreads for. Keeping track of my books, particularly when I finish them. So, I'm making sure I've got everything on lists on my computer, just in case I puke from trying to type on goodreads.
The problem seems to have gotten better as the day went on. The enlarged the font size helps and I've increased the size of my screen as much as I can, but the real problem is the font itself. It's blurry and the letters are too thin (squeezed together maybe?). On top of that the background is too bright in contrast so the letters seem to float, which adds to my whole motion sickness issue. I do have terrible eyesight, but the old contrast didn't force me to keep one eye close the entire time. Still it's not as bad as it was this morning when the whole thing just switched on me while I was doing stuff.
At first I thought I'd done something as I'm using a PC not an Apple, which I'm more familiar with, but then I got notified by a friend in one of the groups I'm in what had happened.
I still haven't looked at the site with my iPad yet. I'm hoping that will be ok.
Difficult to read; i need to take a step back - and on a work station computer that's just not possible. - too small and it's going to give me a headache. Change it back...
The fonts a bit large for my taste, I have to zoom out to actually read comments. And it's kinda blurry, messes with my eyes.

My main problem with the new fonts is that the size difference makes no sense (some things are much too big compared to other) and is not aesthetic. The serif font is incredibly huge (quotes on profiles are monsters compared to the rest).
One of the best things I have decided to do about the font right now is to dim the brightness of my monitor every time I get on Goodreads. It helps some, but I still get a headache within two minutes. -_-
Goodreads is one of my favourite sites on the internet, but the new font is unbearable! After a few sentences, everything becomes blurry, and I got a headache just from reading three reviews! If possible, please return to the previous fonts and colours: they were easier to read!!

The margins are also an issue. I liked the long boxes before, the new ones, especially in groups, is making everything smushed....
The spaces when typing are too skinny, hard to type. Idk if it's just chrome, but typing a comment has a SUPER small font compared to comments posted.
