Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

I agree. And here I thought a visit to the ophthalmologist was eminent. Vastly improved.

IE is much larger than Firefox. The white space is less overpowering and the fonts are bigger. I have to zoom Firefox to get the same effect.
I didn't think anyone optimized for only one browser any more.
The longer I use the Firefox version, the harder I have to squint to use this site.
I am not going to use IE just to come to goodreads.
Please get your tech team to rework this so that it works on all browsers.
And think about increasing the size of the body text so it doesn't feel so cramped.

Please change it back.

This is the thing, tho. Why do I have to install yet another extension because of just one site? My Chrome has enough already and it's getting slower with each add on. And NO I am NOT buying a new laptop or implementing global changes to my programs so I can comfortably read GR reviews.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
edit: but how do I see the italics of quoted parts in comments, that's a feature I don't want to change.....
FOUND IT: Font style unchecked

But it gives me a headache. And it may force me to get the glasses that I probably already need.

Please improve your GR app because it sucks...

Yeah, for me, it's a workaround I would rather not have to do, but I'm going to stick to it for now.
@Danielle and Kaitlyn - you are both very welcome! :)
I would rather not have to make this adjustment at all, but at least the font can be customized this way to something less harsh in my browser, and make my eyes less strained. (The brightness of the white background is still a problem unfortunately, among other measures.)

Only issue is with the font. The letters seem to dissolve into themselves.

You can use the extension Stylish...... it can also change the link colors and such. I'm not familiar if I can use different colors for different sites and such or if it's a one off.

Edit: Love how clean it is, but the font seems to shift a little when I go to a new page.

And the font, OMG SO. MUCH. BETTER. My eyes aren't squinting and aren't trying to decipher what is being read. Someone message me when the site changes again so I can take a look XD

On Chrome 47, the serif font is still significantly thinner and harder to read than in Firefox and IE. I don't use Chrome, but I've found that Google Web fonts, ironically enough, tend to be less readable on some versions of Chrome than they are in other major browsers. This is probably the source of many complaints on this thread.

I totally agree with you.

I'm also one of the "old fashioned" people who hated mobile sites because of the decreased features, so I use the desktop site even when I'm on my phone now. The colors and lack of gradients don't make as much of a difference to me--if by "modern" you were looking for "more like Apple," then I think you've achieved it.
But I do prefer the old fonts =\

There isn't one.
I have an account on shelfari but I never use it and I checked again today and it's doesn't do what I really want to use goodreads for. Keeping track of my books, particularly when I finish them. So, I'm making sure I've got everything on lists on my computer, just in case I puke from trying to type on goodreads.
The problem seems to have gotten better as the day went on. The enlarged the font size helps and I've increased the size of my screen as much as I can, but the real problem is the font itself. It's blurry and the letters are too thin (squeezed together maybe?). On top of that the background is too bright in contrast so the letters seem to float, which adds to my whole motion sickness issue. I do have terrible eyesight, but the old contrast didn't force me to keep one eye close the entire time. Still it's not as bad as it was this morning when the whole thing just switched on me while I was doing stuff.
At first I thought I'd done something as I'm using a PC not an Apple, which I'm more familiar with, but then I got notified by a friend in one of the groups I'm in what had happened.
I still haven't looked at the site with my iPad yet. I'm hoping that will be ok.

Agree on that. My main problem with the new fonts is that the size difference makes no sense (some things are much too big compared to other) and is not aesthetic. The serif font is incredibly huge (quotes on profiles are monsters compared to the rest).

If possible, please return to the previous fonts and colours: they were easier to read!!

If you use Chrome, there's this extension that allows you to alter the font and colors.

Have you tried Libib?

DITTO! Agreed

Thank you so much!!
