Did You Notice Something a Little Different?
UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! For those of you who were having issues with blurriness, we have good news: we pushed out an update this afternoon that improves the sharpness of the font for users who were affected. We’re monitoring all the comments and will keep you posted on any further updates.
If you’re a frequent visitor to Goodreads, you've probably noticed a few tweaks we’ve made to the fonts and colors on the desktop site today. Our goal with these small-but-important changes was to consolidate and refresh our visual styles and lay the groundwork for some design improvements that we’re planning in the future.
What’s different?
To enhance the readability of text on Goodreads, we’ve adopted two new open-source fonts. Lato, our sans-serif font, was designed by Warsaw-based designer Łukasz Dziedzic (“Lato” means “Summer” in Polish). Merriweather, our serif font, was created by Eben Sorkin and was designed to be pleasant to read on screens.
To make it easier to scan the page for information you need, we’ve touched up and modernized the design of common page layout elements like section headers, tabs and links.
To simplify and modernize our visual design, we’ve reduced the number of link colors we use, removed gradients from buttons and the site navigation, and applied a more harmonious color palette to interactive elements such as buttons, stars, and links.

GR, do you even test shit on computers anymore.

It's way too... fucking BRIGHT and the font hurts my eyes. omfg...
I really wish you'd not change things for "the better" when it actually makes things worse. It's like... truly way too bright and hurts the eyes. ... NO.

You know, it'd be nice if you at least acknowledged the comments about the bright white background colour making the site outright painful for many readers, even if it's just to say "Yeah, we like the white, so pffft."

Yup.
If they only care about App users they need to fix all the various problems with that too though. Even when I read GR via my phone I read it from the browser, not the app, due to the fact that the app has so many problems.
People who don't spend much time reading their Feed, but more in Discussions, etc., are typically having a better reaction as well. Because the teeny tiny font problem is only on the Feed, apparently.

Do you not like looking at darker skinned people or what? Put in some non-white people for God's sake. Put in some people over the age of 25.

GR won't acknowledge anything here, and I very much doubt they're reading any of the comments here.
If you'd like to give GR your feedback, here's the place to do it,
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

The font is readable when it's sized normally, but when it's big and bold (titles) it looks fuzzy and when it's smaller (such as in the "currently reading" column) it's nearly illegible.
The teal is difficult for me to visually process as well and I'd really like having a different hyperlink color for links that have been clicked through. It helps me keep what I've viewed straight.

I couldn't agree more!!!

You know how when you photocopy a paper multiple times, the letters get worn out a bit? The letters on GR look like that now.
Also, guys. it's high time we got an upgrade that enables half-star ratings. please do something about that as well!

The new color palette that we are using consists of complementary colors, which should enhance the overall design.

To clarify, we haven't changed the background color of the site - it has always been white. However, we definitely hear the feedback about the increased contrast, and our design team is looking into it.

We are looking at further updates. Stay tuned!

Popular photos are chosen algorithmically, depending what photo you're viewing at the time.

We've read all 1180 comments :) Please feel free to post here, though we may not be able to respond to every individual comment.

For anyone else that hates it on Chrome you can use the Stylish plugin to override styles with your own CSS.

The update is for consistency across the site, so we won't be able to offer multiple viewing options.

What browser are you using? Would you be able to provide a screenshot?

And if you don't know CSS, there's a Stylish style already done here: userstyles.org/styles/121888/goodread...

Can you give us an option to use the new or old version? Please!!!

Good to know, Emily. This is the first time I've ever seen any evidence of that regarding one of these blog posts.
I've had to increase the size from my browser to 140% in order to read the teeny text on the Feed.
Which of course makes the font HUGE in other areas of the site.
And of course I'll need to switch it back to 100% when I leave to go to another site, then back when I come back here, etc.
So, I hope that issue is corrected soon.
As well as the issue with the links on the Feed no longer discernible as links.
And the now nearly invisible Search boxes.

IE: type is very dark black. Bold type e.g. book titles is blurry. Serif type appears crowded except for titles and headlines and sans serif type seems to have more space between letters, but is tiny.
Chrome: The type is very light, making it hard to read. Almost looks like a dark gray/green instead of black. San Serif type is very small and crowded, while serif type is larger and with lots of space between letters making it easier to read. (except for how light the color is).
It appears that on a book's page, the string of reviews is in serif font, but the actual review is in san serif. Any reason for this? I find it much easier to read a review in serif font. Actually the new serif font is much easier to read on Chrome anyway, but the san serif looks more modern. One day we won't remember "how it used to be", but it would be nice to have an easier to read and consistent look no matter what browser we're using. (I didn't test FireFox, don't have on my computer.)

It's a shame, because the smartphone version actually looks great.

You know what would be a really cool upgrade? Giving half stars. Yeah...I've been waiting on that one for a while.
