Fresh Fantasy and Sci-Fi Recommendations for (Nearly) Every Kind of Reader

Younger readers may not be aware of this, but there was a time in the culture when being a fan of science fiction and fantasy was decidedly uncool. In the 1980s, SF fans had to gather in dingy comic book shops and game stores to get their fix of dragons, superheroes, and robots.
The culture has since changed, of course, and SFF fandom is gloriously ascendant. Speculative fiction and its various subgenres have migrated to the center of mainstream popular culture in movies, TV, and video games. But old-school nerds can tell you: It all started with books.
Today’s specially curated collection is for readers who are SFF-curious and/or existing fans who know exactly what they like. The books below have been sorted into interesting stacks by Goodreads’ enthusiastic editorial squad. The categories are designed to offer a kind of side-door option for accessing the genre. As you will see, there are many entrance ramps: climate fiction, SFF/mystery hybrids, recent supernova success stories.
The titles selected skew relatively recent, but you’ll also find some genre classics for the newly initiated and many of the biggest author names currently in the business: N.K. Jemisin, Andy Weir, Kazuo Ishiguro, Margaret Atwood, Brandon Sanderson. Also: the abiding awesomeness that is…Murderbot.
Click on the book covers for more information and reader reviews for each book. If you see anything that warrants further investigation, don’t forget about your Want to Read shelf.
Here be dragon books
The weather on this planet sure is extreme
Sing it with me: spaaaaaaace operrrrraaaaaaa
I spend a lot of time thinking about robots
Dystopias old and new
Gimme some historical fantasy
Can you point me toward recent, super-beloved, 4-star+ SFF books?
I like intricate, strange, and unexpected magic systems
Fantasy books about books make my heart soar
I'd like my sci-fi and fantasy with a side helping of mystery, please

Fourth Wing and Divine Rivals were overhyped. I've only read two on this list. Babel, Annie Bot, Legendborn and Chain-Gang All-Stars look good. I plan to read Red Rising and Dune in the future, but I'll skip So Let Them Burn.

Chain-Gang All Stars is one of the best and most important books I've ever read. Excited to read Annie Bot and heard great things about Butler's Parable of the Sower and Sanderson's Tress of the Emerald Sea. Lots of good options on this list!
Chain gang all stars is literally god tier and I would also sell my soul for Gideon the ninth. If harrowhark needed more bones I would offer mine.
Chain-Gang All Stars stole my heart, ripped it up, threw it on the ground and stomped on it, and then shoved it back into my chest. It's good.
I love this list and the humorous tone of the article :) Also the two intro paragraphs are fascinating. I hadn’t known SFF was once considered so uncool. Good thing change is here

Samhl wrote: "The Blighted Stars by Megan E O’Keefe deserves a spot on this list. Excellent sci-fi!"well a lot of the older ones are very bad reading it twenty to thirty or more years later since a good bit of them have some bad tropes within them especially against women

The book that's mentioned in the statement you're replying to was published in 2023, rendering your reply as a non-sequitur.
oh yay!! It makes me so happy to see 'To Shape a Dragon's Breath' get some love. it's one of my favorites!!!

Fun list! I also thought Fourth Wing was overrated. I loved Red Rising, Murderbot series and The Martian. Parable of the Sower has been on my list forever, but it's happening this month! Looks like I need to add Chain-Gang All-Stars to my list. For the record, I still feel pretty nerdy when confessing my love for SFF books. 😆

The Hobbit?

Personally, I hated Red Rising. But if OP wants to read it, that's their prerogative. I've also heard nothing but good things about So Let Them Burn, but again, their choice. Everyone has different tastes.
Highly recommend the short story collection Women! In! Peril! by Jessie Ren Marshall for speculative sci fi fans!
I've read at least one from each section except dystopian. I really want to read The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport but can't seem to get it on Kobo/hardcopy in Oz.If you're looking at this list and haven't read Murderbot (All Systems Red), go read Murderbot. The first couple of chapters are free on tor.com.
If you're looking for older SFF that is not sexist, I agree with the the recommendation of YA fantasy Sabriel by Garth Nix. I read it recently and was pleasantly surprised.
Having categories for extreme weather and complex magic systems and then not including Stormlight or Mistborn is a crime

What is your point?"
Maybe that a book published in 1965 might not be fairly called "fresh", maybe? What do you think?
I'm missing some military sci-fi.On Basilisk Station
Into the Storm
Hero of the Imperium
Other than than there's a few books listed I'm really interested in reading soon!
I've read 14 on this list and quite a few more on my WTR! Can't wait to get into some of the newer ones and some of the classics!

A Master of Djinn was so good! (But highly recommend reading the smaller stories associated with them first! They give a lot of context and make the world-building so much easier to jump into!)
A Discovery of Witches is an underrated historical/romantic/paranormal fantasy. If you like dark academia, the enemies to lovers like with Xaden and Violet (albeit less “spicy”, and the historical fantasy intrigue (with vampires!) I highly recommend this series. There’s a fifth book coming out soon too!
I would also like to add Illuminae and the sequels. As well as The Loneliest Girl in the Universe and The Darkness Outside Us, some more space sci-fi :)
Just waiting on The Mercy of Gods. Read all of Murderbot and all P Djeli Clark and Mary Robinette Clark that i can find. All great stuff. A Memory Called Empire was a miserable slog. Never been able to read more than a few pages of NK Jemisin or VE Schwab. Much of the rest appears to be YA or romantasy. Not my wheelhouse.

I wouldn't call Dune fresh. It's more of a classic.

I enjoyed Divine Rivals but I feel like her Elements of Cadence novels were even better! What an absolutely lovely world

LOVE there are fans out there!
such a good list! my TBR just grew a fair bit ;) i wanted to get back into sff this year so here is that sign!
The Han Maids Tales, and The Invisible Life of Adie Larue. I want to read The Fox Wife, The Hexologist, and Chain Gang All Stars to name a few.
SFF is my genre of choice, most of life actually, though horror has always been a favorite, too. Lately, I've been delving more into the SF side of things and finding that I really enjoy SF written by women (looking at your Martha Wells & Becky Chambers!). Thanks for this cool list!
