The Top 100 YA Books on Goodreads

Posted by Hayley on July 12, 2018
A battlefield where wild magic fills the air. A high school where a fierce rivalry transforms an entire town. A near-future wasteland where a group of misfits seeks something greater than survival…

This is the world of YA. Whether you're a lifelong fan or a curious reader looking to try something new, come along with us as we reveal the very best of the genre.

There are thousands of YA books, so how did we go about finding the most beloved ones on Goodreads? We started by focusing on what's been added the most to Goodreads members' shelves. But this isn't simply a popularity contest; we wanted the best. So we narrowed down our list to include only books with at least a four-star average rating. We also decided to select just the first book in a series—otherwise prolific authors like Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu, and Sarah J. Maas would claim many more spots on this list.

And now, without further ado, we present the Top 100 YA Books, ranked by popularity on Goodreads. How many have you read? Tell us in the comments!

message 6: by M (new)

M 30 so far.

message 7: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Ramirez 31 out of 100! Not too shabby.
With another 13 marked "Want to Read". :)

So many of these look good; and I'm surprised (but I shouldn't be, GR is a friend to me) at the popularity of the titles less 'mainstream.' It's good to see lesser-known books/authors among the well-known, and I'm very pleased that "Amy and Roger's Epic Detour" made it on the list! One of my favorites...

message 8: by Gerandpa (new)

Gerandpa 61! Plus 13 on my TBR

message 12: by Sheri (new)

Sheri 40 with another 8 or so TBR

message 13: by L. (new)

L. McCoy I’m not sure which is worse, that I’m the target age for these books and have only read 4 of these or the fact that the only one of those 4 I’d consider to be good (as in above 3 stars) has a sequel that sucks dick.

message 14: by Connie (new)

Connie Von Tobel Missing is Jeff Giles The Edge of Everything and The Brink of Darkness, loved those.

message 15: by Tara (last edited Jul 26, 2018 11:33AM) (new)

Tara 41/100 (almost half) already read with at least 10-15 on my to-read list. Goodreads you have good taste ;)

message 16: by Devin (new)

Devin I've read 22 and a bunch on my tbr.

message 17: by Luna (new)

Luna 25 and more to be read soon!!!

message 18: by Angelica (new)

Angelica I've only read 18 so far, but there are lots more that I want to read!

Leonie’s Little Library 56 so far and another 15 or so in my TBR

message 20: by Al (new)

Al Medina 6 read, 1 to be read. I'm good with that.

message 21: by Jane (new)

Jane Dare 31 - but many of those listed are the first in a trilogy or series and I have usually read the whole series if I liked the first book . . .

message 22: by Merle (new)

Merle 25 out of 100 and many of them are on my TBR

message 23: by Mojca (new)

Mojca 43 :D

message 24: by Angie (new)

Angie Boyd Only 19 😔, but many more of those 19 authors! (Once I like an author, I seem to read EVERYTHING they publish before I move on!)

message 25: by A (new)

A Its funny.
Except for The Winners Curse and The Scorpio Races, most of these books I did not like.

message 26: by Lidia (new)

Lidia 19 so far + 3 more on my tbr list. Probably the last ones from this genre, From those that I read I really liked only half of them. I am too old for this genre already.

message 27: by Valarie (new)

Valarie 15/100

message 28: by J. (new)

J. Terrible list. Missing many classics. Judy Blum, Paul Zindel. ME Kerr.

How can Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack and The Pigman not be on this list.

message 29: by Debra (new)

Debra 3 of them . Will have to read some more

message 30: by La Sofi (new)

La Sofi 11 and 15 are on my tbr ;)

message 31: by Jodie (new)

Jodie Wright 14. But a lot of these aren't my kind of thing.

message 32: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Wright 12 - but I think YA is the wrong classification for many of these books. I have enjoyed all the ones I have read and look forward to reading more of them, but I am nearly 70!

message 33: by Angelica (new)

Angelica Juarez Gonzalez I've read 34.

Y definitivamente “A Court of Thorns and Roses” no es un YA. Es un NA.

message 39: by Belkis (new)

Belkis Not too bad, I've read 50 of them so far :)

message 40: by Jen (new)

Jen 14 and 4 on my TBR. However there is no John Marsden (how is the Tomorrow series not there at least?) and no Mira Grant (Feed) and no Isobelle Carmody (Obernewtyn chronicles) or Andrew Fukuda (The Hunt) or Fleur Ferris plus several other amazing YA authors.

L. McCoy Amanda wrote: "12 - but I think YA is the wrong classification for many of these books. I have enjoyed all the ones I have read and look forward to reading more of them, but I am nearly 70!"

YA is pretty much a bad marketing label if you ask me. Most people I’ve talked to who are into these sorts of books are older than the age that these books are marketed to. Then again I’m 17 and my friends and I (both online and IRL) if we’re talking about books, they are ones that are considered more adult (some of my IRL friends (most of them 14-20) and myself are big fans of Stephen King for example).
This is why I wouldn’t even pay attention to that label if it weren’t for the fact that it’s all over the place, especially on this website.

You do have a point there. Alot of Goodreads Reviewers/BookTubers who do read YA are in their twenties (some even older) weird things amirite
