The Top 100 YA Books on Goodreads

Posted by Hayley on July 12, 2018
A battlefield where wild magic fills the air. A high school where a fierce rivalry transforms an entire town. A near-future wasteland where a group of misfits seeks something greater than survival…

This is the world of YA. Whether you're a lifelong fan or a curious reader looking to try something new, come along with us as we reveal the very best of the genre.

There are thousands of YA books, so how did we go about finding the most beloved ones on Goodreads? We started by focusing on what's been added the most to Goodreads members' shelves. But this isn't simply a popularity contest; we wanted the best. So we narrowed down our list to include only books with at least a four-star average rating. We also decided to select just the first book in a series—otherwise prolific authors like Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu, and Sarah J. Maas would claim many more spots on this list.

And now, without further ado, we present the Top 100 YA Books, ranked by popularity on Goodreads. How many have you read? Tell us in the comments!

natalie I'm not sure if I'd consider some of these (i.e. Harry Potter, A Wrinkle in Time, Percy Jackson) young adult. Also, this list is missing Lord of the Rings! D: (Oh, and I've only read three of these. XP)

I look at YA as books about YA's not necessarily only for readers who are YA. I'm 36 and read a lot of YA.

Jacqueline Mudge-Cooke 11 and 3 in my TBR list.

message 113: by Celia (new)

Mary Amanda wrote: "12 - but I think YA is the wrong classification for many of these books. I have enjoyed all the ones I have read and look forward to reading more of them, but I am nearly 70!"

YA is the correct classification. They are books about teen characters so they are considered young adult. But that doesn't mean non-teens can't enjoy them!

Gigi (imaginingbetweenthepages) 26 so far soon to be 27. I have majority of these as ptr.

Also, none of Megan Whalen Turner's books are here and they should be!

Katsuro Mary wrote: YA is the correct classification. They are books about teen characters so they are considered young adult. But that doesn't mean non-teens can't enjoy them! ."
All due respect, I don't agree with that. "YA books" refers to books for young adults, not necessarily about them.

message 143: by Ansar (new)

Ansar Foushanji 0. Big, fat ZERO! Though I read plenty, I haven't read a single one of these. I intend to read at least one YA novel in my life, so I shall pick one from this list.

message 148: by Marie (UK) (last edited Jul 30, 2018 02:11PM) (new)

Marie (UK) 19 BUT =YA confuses me just WHAT is it that makes something YA - for instance The Book Thief classed here as YA is in my view contemporary literature through and through not YA

can anyone at GR tell me what makes a book YA a definitive guide

message 149: by Katsuro (new)

Katsuro Marie (UK) wrote: "19 BUT =YA confuses me just WHAT is it that makes something YA - for instance The Book Thief classed here as YA is in my view contemporary literature through and through not YA
"

Yeah, I mean, the protagonist is a tad too young to be a young adult herself.

message 150: by Box (new)

Box 17 so far but I have quite a few of them that I've got on my shelf to read next!
