The Top 100 YA Books on Goodreads

Posted by Hayley on July 12, 2018
A battlefield where wild magic fills the air. A high school where a fierce rivalry transforms an entire town. A near-future wasteland where a group of misfits seeks something greater than survival…

This is the world of YA. Whether you're a lifelong fan or a curious reader looking to try something new, come along with us as we reveal the very best of the genre.

There are thousands of YA books, so how did we go about finding the most beloved ones on Goodreads? We started by focusing on what's been added the most to Goodreads members' shelves. But this isn't simply a popularity contest; we wanted the best. So we narrowed down our list to include only books with at least a four-star average rating. We also decided to select just the first book in a series—otherwise prolific authors like Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu, and Sarah J. Maas would claim many more spots on this list.

And now, without further ado, we present the Top 100 YA Books, ranked by popularity on Goodreads. How many have you read? Tell us in the comments!

Jim 1, and one on TBR... looking through the list made me happy in not a YA anymore... yeesh, these books seem so overwrought... is being a YA really that fraught with foreboding and fake romance and smarminess?

message 187: by Michael (new)

Michael Christopher Full disclosure: I believe any reading is good, and more is even better. Also, I am an older adult, not a YA. What struck me most about the list is that the majority of the books seem to be in the SCIFY/Fantasy genres. There are only a few titles that would be considered literature and hardly any non-fiction titles. I wish that the YA list had greater variety for those readers curious enough to try different genres. I realize now what an important impact those YA books recommended to me at the time have throughout adult life, and I continue to reread these books or to read the longer, more challenging books of those authors. Also, reading a short story or two of authors of literature can give the reader a chance to sample a variety of styles, and perhaps other works of those authors. I am not saying stop reading the types of books you currently enjoy, but every once in a while try something different. For example, I myself have more mysteries/thrillers than I can ever read, but I would have certainly missed many wonderful books if I don't include classics, history, biography and other non-fiction, and contemporary literary fiction , etc. in my reading mix. As a former YA reader, I hope you will all enjoy reading as much as I do 50 years later.
