Updatery: Panel/Signing in Frisco, RT, Real life stuff
Business first!
On Monday, April 22 @ 7pm, I’ll be at the Barnes & Nobles in Frisco, Texas for a World Book Night Eve event with Rachel Caine, Victoria Scott, and Rosemary Clement-Moore. We’ll be talking about the books that inspired us. It’ll be an awesome evening, with a book signing to follow. If you’re in the area, I hope you can make it! Details are here.
And in just a couple more weeks, I’ll be in Kansas City MO at the RT Booklovers Convention. I’ll be on one panel,ALL THINGS GO IN URBAN...

Searching for a few good betas
I’m both excited and terrified to make this request. I finished my first round of edits on THE SHARPEST BLADE and sent the changes off to my editor today. I have a little time to make a few more changes, and I desperately need more feedback from a few readers/writers. So, I’m asking for beta readers.
This is the last Shadow Reader novel, and so it has tons of spoilers in it. It’s nerve-wracking to turn it over to anyone I don’t already know very well because… Well, I have to trust that you wan...

Signing in Dallas on Friday
Technically, the signing is in Richardson, but it might as well be Dallas. Around 60 authors will be signing their books at the Double Tree Hotel off of 75. I’ll be one of them. If you’re in the area, do stop by. A portion of book sales will benefit the Richardson Adult Literacy Center. Plus, it’ll be fun. This conference is put on by my local RWA group, and it’s awesome to be around so many people who love reading and writing.
The full list of authors who will be signing is on the DARA websit...

The Biz: Writing Expenses
The hubby and I just sat down to look at our taxes this weekend. We had to gather up our W-2′s and all that other fun information to give to the IRS. Since I’m self-employed as a writer, I had to go through my business transactions and put them into categories. I’m kind of astounded by how much I spent last year. I don’t feel like I did much, but all those little things add up quickly.
What little things? The postage, the website maintenance, the office supplies, etc. Since I’m a total nerd, I...

On Asking for Help
I received my edit letter yesterday! Hurray! I love edit letters. I love reading my editor’s thoughts on the book, and how I can make the book better. Yes, I always hold my breath when I click open the email. I brace myself for the, “This is a good start, BUT…” but I’ve been lucky so far and my editors haven’t hated my books. Which makes sense, of course, or the publisher wouldn’t have bought them.
Anyway, revisions start for real today. I’ve been working on revising for the last few weeks b...

Audiobooks and Navy SEALS
I think I’ve mentioned either here or on Twitter and Facebook that I’ve started listening to audiobooks lately. I’ve never beena huge fan of them – they just never sucked me in the way written books do – but I must have been listening to the wrong type of book. Apparently, as far as audiobooks are concerned, nonfiction is my genre. I’m almost finished with my third book this month. That’s insane considering one of my arguments against listening to audiobooks was that it would take me months t...

My Ticket is Booked
I finally bought my plane ticket to Kansas City, Missouri for the 2013 RT Booklovers Convention! I went last year in Chicago, and I had a great time. I absolutely loved seeing so many awesome, enthusiastic readers. You guys seriously rock. I mean, a lot of you flew in to Chicago just to meet your favorite authors. That is so thoroughly cool!
That’s one of the main reason I’m going again, too. I love authors! Every one I’ve met has been so nice. They’re sweet and fun and funny. I can’t wait for...

Book Three Has a Title!
Good urban fantasy titles are difficult for me to come up with. In fact, I don’t think I’ve come up with one on my own that’s worked yet. I threw out a lot of options for the first Shadow Reader book. About half of them sounded too paranormal romance-ish. THE SHADOW READER was suggested by my publisher, and it stuck and grew on me.
THE SHATTERED DARK was my previous editor’s idea, too. That one was insta-love. I still think it’s the best urban fantasy title ever, but I’m probably biased.
This...

Random Things
Today is a short work day. Tuesdays and Thursdays always are because the boys go to daycare. They used to take a second nap when they came home, but not anymore. Insert big huge sad face here. And it’s wet outside today, which means no playing outside, which means it’s going to be a long afternoon. Love those guys, but they sure do suckthe energy right out of me.
I’m starting over that short story I’ve been working on. Again. I’m determined to right the damn thing. The story part of is great,...

Short story thoughts
I’ve been tinkering with a short story. I’ve never written one before, and I don’t have enough of this one written to say if it’s easy or hard, or if I like writing shorts or not. I can say that I’m struggling with it. It’s set in the same universe as the Shadow Reader novels, so I’m attempting to write in first person present POV. The problem is, every thought that goes through my characters’ heads and every word that comes out of their mouths sounds like the thoughts and words of McKenzie –...
