One of the overlooked items in the Frank Murphy Museum in Harbor Beach is an exquisite relief of the Governor-general’s profile in narra by the Filipino sculptor Graciano T.Nepomuceno. It reminds me of fine cameo jewelry that used to be a popular ornament for women before the Philippines. #ambethocampo #historian #history #museum #cameo

When I saw the folded "banig" in the Frank Murphy Museum in Harbor Beach, Michigan I told the guides that William Howard Taft was photographed in his porch with a mat from Basey, Samar at his feet. They replied, "but isn't this a sleeping mat?" I explained that some are personalized and made to hang on a wall. Given permission to open it--voila! It was not just personalized, it had a picture of Murphy (Right).
I recommended that they roll rather than fold the mat to preserve it better and ...

Among the many souvenirs from the Philippines in the FRANK MURPHY MUSEUM in Harbor Beach, Michigan are four paintings by National Artist Fernando Amorsolo. Top left is Woman with a jar (1935). Top Right is a portrait of Murphy's mother painted from a photograph in 1941. Below are two large, very flattering, portraits of Murphy painted in 1946. According to the guides Murphy's favorite was the depiction of him in hunting attire (Lower Right) reminiscent of Velasquez's, also flattering, portrait o...

When the Philippine Commonwealth was established in 1935, Frank Murphy (1890-1949) became the last American Governor-general of the Philippines, and the first U.S. High Commissioner to the Philippines. Visited his birthplace and home in Harbor Beach, Michigan now a museum with Ricky Punzalan, Associate Professor at the University of Michigan School of Information. I am often amazed how the present often reads like the past. Going through the Hayden Papers in the Bentley Historical Library I found articles and pictures of cocheros publicly protesting regulation in 1932, and the muse was a Queen of Cocheros who delivered an impassioned speech before the Manila City Council. King of the Road before the Jeepney Driver was the Cochero. Before we had jeeps we had calesas and carromatas.

Tsundoku is the Japanese word for stacks of books you bought but have not read. I have a lot of those as you can see from one of the test shots Chael Santos took for the Alliance Francaise "75 Years Happy Together." A book that had me wearing the insignia, Officer in the Order of Arts and Letters of the Republic of France.
My Inquirer column today is not so much about books I have not read but of all the Philippine history I have yet to read.

Before we had aircon or electric fans people used manual ones--from the pamaypay made from woven coconut leaves to the Spanish abanico. Some Philippine homes had a "punkah" like a large fan suspended on the ceiling with a string that a servant (or even a trained monkey) can pull to create a breeze, or drive flies away from the dining table.
A replica can be seen in the Casa Manila Museum in Intramuros.
