FIRST BOOK ON THE PHILIPPINES ,1523.
This rare first edition, in mint, condition, preserved in the Clements Library in the University of Michigan is an account of the Magellan expedition, taken down by Maximilian of Transylvania, for the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, shared in a letter to the Cardinal Archbishop of Salzburg.
My first time to physically handle a copy. Hidden inside the beautiful leather-bound tome are the bookseller's notes. The National Library of the Philippines has ...

Walking through museums I meet many old friends I have only known through books or pictures. My “Andito ka lang pala” moment at the Detroit Institute of Art was seeing Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry Murals circa 1932-33. A pity Rivera is overshadowed today by his wife Frida Kahlo.

These are two of my happy places in the Central Campus of the University of Michigan: the Clements Library, repository of Rare Books and manuscripts, and the Hatcher Graduate Library in the back that has all the Filipiniana reference books I need for teaching, lecturing and writing.
My Inquirer column today is on researching in the Clements Library and reading letters written by enemy soldiers during the Philippine-American War. I can only wish we find counterpart accounts from Filipino soldier...

Ongoing renovation of the U.P. Main Library in Diliman made me wonder where the original plaster of Guillermo Tolentino's "Oblation" is being kept. It used to be in the top floor of the Main Library where I photographed it in 2010. Photo on the Left reminded me of the photo on the Right showing future National Artist Guillermo Tolentino (center) flexing with two others. Tolentino's assistant, Anastacio Caedo, third from left shows off his winning form that is believed to have been one of the mod...

Ma Mon Luk is synonymous with the mami-siopao pairing that is part of Pinoy eating habits like bagoong is to Kare-kare. To give a face to the name, Ma Mon Luk (right) gives cash assistance to Espiridiona Bonifacio, whose bone structure was used as the basis for Guillermo Tolentino’s depictions of her brother Andres Bonifacio. Photo circa 1945.

Met Jerushah Gloria in San Francisco. She learned about me and my work from friends who were my former students. Her contribution to a welcome party for me was a Rizal ice cream cake that improved our IQ and eyesight. She also gifted me with Freud slippers to keep my feet warm in Michigan. As usual, I live on the kindness of strangers who became friends when I met them. Mabuhay!

Fake News is not new. It is as old as History itself.
Off to San Francisco this weekend to give a lecture on one of my favorite historical characters, Jose E. Marco, who gave us gems like the bogus Code of Kalantiaw and the novel La Loba Negra attributed to Fr. Jose Burgos. My Inquirer column today is on his first hoax that opened the doors to half a century of forging Philippine history.
Anyone in the UC Berkeley area? Lecture is on Monday March 20.
