After a day traveling from AnnArbor to Chicago to Dubai my exhaustion evaporated with the warm Pinoy welcome from the Emirates Literary Festival: Farrah, Maryann, and Karen. They asked about Freud who was more than happy to be out of my carry-on

Freud in the Ford museum. He wasn’t too keen on the cars but asked to be photographed with George Washington’s campaign bed in the background. Fascinating, the bed folds into a maleta or suitcase.

My Inquirer column today reflects on the scarcity of online material on the 1918 Fluu Pandemic in the Philippines, contrasted with the ocean of material that future historians will have for the Covid Pandemic we endured.

Declassified U.S. State Department documents on the Philippines yield some obscure information. This cable from the US Embassy in Manila provided details on Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. as a sportsman. These are his golf stats sent previous to his 14-16 State Visit to the U.S.

The Santo Niño comes in many shapes and forms. Not just as the Santo Niño de Cebu [Upper left] that is the oldest Christian relic in the Philippines. It is said to be the same image Magellan presented to Queen Juana on her baptism in 1521. The latest version of the Santo Niño is probably the Santo Niño de Jollibee,(Upper Right). Folk images in bronze as anting-anting [Below]depict the niño naked with an erect penis that brings more than good luck.

Had she not passed away 20 years ago, my mom would be 90 today. She lives on in my memory and in others too.
Check out the extended National Museum exhibit "Larawan at Litrato: Foto-óleo and Picture Portraits in the Philippines, 1891-1953" to see two images of my mother: one on tin that my sister found in an old photo studio on Gastambide, the one in the photo was presented to her by a jilted suitor. I inherited this from my grandfather and share it with the public. Former NM Deputy Director...

So much untapped primary source material made accessible by the University of Michigan. My Inquirer column today is based on declassified U.S. State Department documents that references questions about two of the highest medals Ferdinand Marcos claimed was conferred on him by the U.S. Army Records checked in 1966 showed that Marcos had not received the Distinguished Service Cross and the Silver Star as claimed.

Last weekend, I hit five bookstores in downtown Ann Arbor to browse, and perhaps pick up some rare Filipiniana. Freud felt right at home in the West End used and antiquarian bookstore (left).
