RIZAL'S SHIRTLESS SELFIE.
We all know Rizal in an overcoat, but in his youth, long before he became National Hero; he took off his shirt, posed in front of a mirror, and drew a selfie. This drawing reproduced in Austin Craig's "Life, lineage and labors of Jose Rizal" (1913) is unlocated and believed to have been lost or destroyed during the 1945 Battle for Manila.
If Rizal had a smartphone, he would not have drawn this, and Ambeth R. Ocampo would have no career.

This photograph from 1916 shows how American English was being taught to Filipino schoolchildren. My teachers never wrote as legibly as this on the blackboard. In college some of my teachers got the coveted annual Hieroglyphics Award given to the teacher with the worst penmanship.
The photo is but one in thousands of Philippine photographs preserved in the Bentley Historical Library, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I last visited in 2000 thanks to a Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship. Two...

Freud in the Mohammed bin Rashid Library. One million square feet. Took one billion dirhams to build. How do you get a book from the top shelf the height of a three storey building? Everything is mechanized and computerized. This must be a glimpse into the future of libraries. Thanks to the 2023 Emirates Literary Festival for bringing us here.

My Inquirer column today is on first-hand information on school suicides and attempted suicides. These are under-reported and must be addressed because all human life is precious.
