Santo Niño de Cebu in Michigan.
Jesuit parish of St. Mary's in the University of Michigan dedicated its 5pm Sunday mass to the Santo Niño de Cebu and the small Filipino community here. One of the readings and part of the prayers were in Filipino. Fr. Kyle Shinseki,SJ opened and closed in Filipino picked up from Pinoys in Hawaii!
This is the first Santo Niño mass in Ann Arbor and is hopefully not the last. I feel at home away from home.

Heneral Goyo in Michigan.
In 1899, during the Philippine-American War Emilio Aguinaldo's representatives (on the left) met in Manila with the Philippine Commission (four men in white on the right) to discuss peace. Third from left is General Gregorio del Pilar.
This photograph is from the Worcester Collection in the University of Michigan Library. A selection from the collection is available online from the U-M Library Digital Collections.

One man's trash is another's treasure.
When I was a boy libraries only had books. The libraries I now use are not confined to the printed word. They have audio, video, photographs etc. The University of Michigan Library has some surprising items like these campaign materials for the election of Ferdinand Marcos as President and Fernando Lopez as Vice-President. To help the librarians I have to figure out if these were used for the 1965 elections that both won, or for their re-election in 1969.

Offhand I think this is part of the postwar anti-Huk or anti-Communist campaign.

Living on the kindness of strangers.
While my flight to Michigan did not start out right, with an 11-hour delay in Incheon, there was silver lining. Before boarding LOURDES LOWERY offered one of two orders of Chinese food she got from a meal voucher that the airline forgot to give me. Upon arrival in Detroit she even offered to take me to Ann Arbor.
My apartment was furnished but didn't have pots, pans, plates, and utensils. Not even a can opener! My neighbor, SAIDI from Bangladesh, brought ...

On June 12, 1898 the same day Philippine Independence was declared from a window in Emilio Aguinaldo's Kati home the cover of Judge magazine [Left] had Uncle Sam holding Filipinos (depicted as a black native!) and asking for information on what to do with the people dropped into his lap by the victory of George Dewey against the Spanish fleet in the May 1, 1898 Battle of Manila Bay

This is not Hogwarts. It is the Law Library of the University of Michigan.
I noticed that most old U.S universities have buildings in Tudor or old English style that evoke an idea of Oxford or Cambridge. When I remarked that the University of Michigan looked "new" my new friend Jonathan Valdez gave me a tour of the buildings in the neo-classic style and we entered the Law School where he pointed out one of the university emblems on the stained glass windows [Right] that reads University of the P...

Ann Arbor is home for the next four months as Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan where I am teaching a lecture class on The Philippines Under Two Empires (Spain and the US) and a seminar class on Rizal and the emergence of the Filipino nation. I took Freud to the University store and he wasn't very happy with what I had him try on.

The first sunrise of 2023.
I wonder why people wait in vigil for the turn of the new year at midnight when we should be waiting for the dawn of a new day, a new year. I did just that and this is the view from my study at daybreak January 1, 2023.
I started the year with so much hope, but am now stressed and in limbo, because all flights to and from NAIA were delayed, diverted, or cancelled due to a radar issue early this afternoon. My flight is scheduled for 0030 later but there is no update fr...

The Road (or Monument) Not Taken.
There were three, perhaps more, studies for the “improvement” of the Rizal Monument that was to mark the hero’s 1961 Birth Centennial. Which of the four do you prefer? The original on the far right, or the three “modernized” versions on the left?
The second from the right was chosen and executed in aluminum from a design by future National Artist for Arrchitecture Juan Nakpil. The offensive pylon was removed, following negative public opinion, and relocated on...
