My new book is out!
Thanks to Czech Ambassador Jana Sediva (Left) our pandemic project turned from idea to a physical book.
Launched this afternoon, Kaibigan-Pratele: Czech-Philippine Cultural and Diplomatic Dialogue .
It truly takes a village to produce a book. I wrote the lead essays and organized the contributors:Benjamin Vallejo, PhD, Fr Anselm Manalastas, OSB, Ricardo T. Jose, PhD, Ryan Palad, Pavel Vondra, and Menardo Mendoza. Ige Ramos designed the book. Dalibor Micka and...

A few weeks ago I posted a 19th century studio photograph of a "lechera" or lady milk vendor, this one is male or "lechero."
LECHE the Spanish word for milk, is used as an expletive in the Philippines by people who do not know it is the vulgar word for semen. Long before fresh milk was available in tetra bricks or chilled in glass bottles; long before canned milk was introduced by Bear Brand (Marca Oso) or "Real Fresh" Pinoys bought fresh milk (cow, goat or carabao kind) from itinerant peddlers ...

To make everyday life worthwhile one must learn not just to see, but more importantly to notice.
This alcohol lamp/burner is an often overlooked artifact in the Special Collections Room of the Ateneo de Manila University Rizal Library. Last year, researching in the T.H. Pardo de Tavera Papers I came across a clipping from the December 29, 1923 Philippines Free Press (inset) that gives the history of this artifact.
When Rizal met his mother and sisters in Fort Santiago, days before hi...

Guillermo E. Tolentino is one of my favorite artists. I have been researching on him since the 1980's and thought I had seen all the photos of him and his works until this glass slide turned up in the Marquardt Collection of Lantern (Glass) Slides in the Bentley Historical Collection, University of Michigan. I presume the impressive work he is posing with was one of the casualties of the 1945 Battle for Manila. Sayang.

Horacio de la Costa is the name is on a busy Makati Street and a building on the Ateneo campus in Q.C. I said a prayer for him on his 107th birthday today as I opened to the flyleaf of one of the treasures in my library: a first edition copy of his book, "Jesuits in the Philippines" (Harvard University Press, 1961), inscribed to his friend Leon Ma. Guerrero:
"For Leonie, who will be kind to this Book, because of the golden hours we spent, a long time ago, planning all the books we would wr...

Today's "feels like" 40C in Manila made me miss Ann Arbor that is cool at 8C. Hot and humid it may be, but the smiles of my students yesterday made it all worth it.
This term is the last time I will teach completely online in the Ateneo, I flew home from the US earlier than scheduled to dismiss my classes face to face.
So, there goes another batch of students who hopefully learned some Philippine history and enjoyed it as well. The photo on the lower right are my students at the Univ...

Una Lechera. Long before fresh milk was sold in bottles, cans, and tetra paks there was the itinerant milk vendor. One could have real fresh cow, goat, or carabao milk from an earthenware jar measured in scoops. This is a 19thC studio portrait depicting everyday life in Filipinas called “tipos del pais.” #ambethocampo #philippines #milk #vendot #filipinas #history
