Carlo Tanseco needed a photo of Rizal’s rosary for a painting he is working on. Though I had sent him a file photo I visited the Ateneo Archives last week to take a more recent pic. I first saw this rosary when I was a freshman in the Ateneo High School. That early I learned to see and know Rizal beyond textbooks and monuments. It was a long process to get to “Rizal without the Overcoat” first published in 1990. After college, I attended the Las Pinas Bamboo Organ Festival twice with Fr Jose A. ...

The Basilica of Taal, completed in 1878, and dedicated to St Martin of Tours is the biggest church in the Philippines (and they claim in all of Asia). It is a testament of faith that this small town built so impressive a church. It should be better known and studied.
Compare the church circa 1900 (Top) with that in May 2023 (Bottom). I wish I knew how to take better pictures. Off-hand the new steeple resembles a baby bottle nipple.

Every time I visit Taal, Batangas I make my way to the Marcela Agoncillo Shrine (presently closed for renovation) and the Galicano and Leon Apacible House (Upper left). Although I have visited them before I always see something new in the old displays. Looking at the stock certificates issued to Galicano Apacible (1864-1949) doctor and Jose Rizal's cousin, you guess which of the three stock certificates caught my eye and why?

"Kuryente" was a term old journalists used to describe someone who was fooled by fake news.
I almost got fried when I received a photograph of "Rizal Toilet Paper" from Spain. My friend who sent it said:"Spaniards are using Rizal to wipe their behind!"
Fortunately, historical method requires that you: think, research, and validate before you share. Rizal "embossed virgin cellulose toilet paper" is not named after our National Hero but is a Spanish double surname, the name of the limited...

Aerial view of prewar Manila with the Post Office in the foreground. The building was razed during the 1945 Battle for Manila, reconstructed but burned in May 2023. If people want it done, it will rise from the ashes like a Phoenix probably better than it was before. Photo from Special Collections, Ateneo de Manila Rizal Library.

Sometimes I am torn between sharing or keeping my research on this page.
Last week, I took a photo of Josephine Bracken's slip-ons when it was being moved from one display case to another. I wrote a caption citing one of Rizal's letters. Then I find out that someone had used both photo and most of the caption as his own. (compare my post with that on Memories of Old Manila) Mr. Reambonanza appropriated the photo and even my own memory of Rizal's letter as his own.
