RIZAL'S CHRISTMAS TREE,
In the Fall of 1886, Rizal dedicated a manuscript with his translation of Hans Cristian Andersen tales, from the German into Tagalog, to his nephews and nieces. He decorated the manuscript with charming spot drawings one of them depicting a Christmas Tree.
The photo on the left is Rizal's Christmas Tree as it appeared in a 1950's book, the photo on the right is the same Christmas Tree from a prewar photostatic copy of the manuscript, faded and defaced by a Bure...

Photos from Ambeth R. Ocampo's post

Visitors to the Marcelo H. del Pilar Shrine in Bulacan can measure themselves beside a life size photograph of the hero. They can even try on his iconic "bigote."
Textbook history teaches us that he was one of the pillars of the Propaganda Movement in Spain, editor of the reformist paper "La Solidaridad." Left out are details of his life: Rizal as a "frenemy" and he abandoned a wife and two daughters for his country. You have to be a stone not to be touched by his letters filled with longi...

Often overlooked by visitors to BINONDO CHURCH is one of the oldest documented paintings in the Philippines: N.S. Se Pronto Socorro [Our Lady of Prompt Help]. The image was venerated as early as 1588 in the church of San Gabriel in the Parian or ghetto for the Chinese, outside the walls of Intramuros. It is believed to be the only 16th century painting by a Chinese artisan in the Philippines. Copied from a European model (perhaps an estampita) this painting on metal has been adorned with gold, s...

To help American teachers with their class lists the Insular Bureau of Education published a listing of Philippine Baptismal Names in 1905.

Walked around Binondo this morning to prepare for a special Walking Tour of Rizal's Manila I am giving in 2024.
Passed by the house near the corner of Urbitztondo and Elcano streets, where General Antonio Luna was born in October 1866. Structure is intact. A pity you, cannot go inside nor pose close to the historical marker because the frontage is used as a parking lot and home for informal settlers, guarded by a ferocious dog. Contented myself with a photo of Freud seated on a garbage bin by th...

Thanks to all the people who came to my last book signing for 2023 at the Ayala Museum today.
Some brought whole collections but Agnes had all my books from the 1990 Looking Back. RJ, a lawyer, came all the way from Catanduanes, and Mega, an Indonesian, is bringing her books back to Jakarta.
My most inspiring guest was 6 year old Renzo who requested his dad to drive him all the way from Batangas to Makati to have his books signed.
Readers like these make all my toil worthwhile. Sa...

126 years ago today the Pact of Biyak-na-Bato was signed enacting a truce between the Spanish and Filipino revolutionary forces. Following the signing of the pact Emilio Aguinaldo got on a train in Bulacan for Dagupan and then to Sual where they sailed on the steamer S.S. Uranus and arrived in Hong Kong on December 31, 1897. Photographed on the windows of the train (from left): Gregorio del Pilar, Wenceslai Viniegra. Emilio Aguinaldo, Vito Belarmino and Pedro Paterno.
