Rizal Monument Series 4.
People of a certain age will remember this aluminum pylon (Upper Left) that marked the boundary between Parañaque and Pasay. It used to be located on the middle of Roxas Boulevard where a footbridge now stands near Max Baclaran, but removed when the present flyover was built and nobody knows where it went.
This pylon was once installed over the Rizal Monument (Right) but was removed due to negative public opinion. The pylon was part of an over-all plan by Natio...

Rizal Monument Series 3.
Alfonso T. Ongpin's photo-documentation of the entries to the Rizal Monument Competition includes a series of photographs of the bronze figures of the Rizal monument still in the studio of the sculptor Richard Kissling. The bronze figures were cast in a foundry in Paris, while the base and obelisk were made from granite sourced in Switzerland.

Rizal Monument Series 2.
Photos of some of the entries to the International Rizal Monument Competition (1905-1907) from the album of Alfonso T. Ongpin. First Prize went to the entry (Top Right) "To the Martyr of Bagumbayan" by Italian Carlo Nicoli, but for some reason the commission eventually went to the SECOND Prize winner (Top Left) "Motto Stella" or "Guiding Star" by Swiss Richard Kissling.

My Inquirer column today goes back to Edmund Plauchut [Second photo] a Frenchman who lived in Manila and constructed his account of Gomburza from eyewitnesses.
Like many historians I first read "La Algarada Caviteña de 1872" by Edmondo Plauchut (1916) [Left of Portrait] that has Plauchut's retelling of Gomburza translated from the original French from the third installment of "L'archipel des Philippines" in Revue des Deux Mondes (1877) [Right of Portrait] into Spanish as reproduced in La S...

Rizal Monument Series 1.
Two views of the Marble Hall, Ayuntamiento de Manila in 1907 photographed by Alfonso T. Ongpin showing the different models and drawings submitted for the Rizal Monument Contest. Some entries were disqualified because they did not meet the deadline, others for not meeting specifications, shortlisting to about 40 entries evaluated by a jury.
At the end of the hall in the Top Photo you can see Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo's painting "Per Pacem et Libertatem" destr...

Reel vs Real.
Compare Cedrick Juan (Center of the colored Gomburza Movie poster) with the three black and white images of the real Fr. Burgos. A film is about storytelling, it is not a doctoral dissertation. Watch the film and be moved to action, history remains relevant to us today because things don't have to be the way they are.
My Inquirer column is a review of Gomburza:

Rizal and Gomburza.
Watching Pepe Diokno's "Gomburza" reminded me of Rizal's dedication in "El Filibusterismo" (1891). In the manuscript (Top), Rizal didn't arrange their names alphabetically, Bur-Go-Za but rendered it as Gom-Bur-Za. He got Gomes's name wrong but corrected it in the printed version (Bottom). In the manuscript the date of execution is left blank, the date in the printed version, February 27 is wrong it should be the 17th. Rizal supplied the ages of the priests. All mista...

One of my favorite views in Makati is space within space carved out of Tower One on Ayala Triangle by National Artist Leandro V. Locsin. My pragmatic father didn’t agree, for him my wonderful place was “wasted space.” Remembering LUO and Lindy on a humid Christmas night.
