If you think history is boring, you had a bad teacher.
If you think history is about memorizing facts, you do not realize how subversive history can be.

LEGAL ISSUE ON MARRIAGE.
Reading an article from the August 1934 Graphic magazine regarding the "Yangco Twins" Lucio and Simplicio Godino and their wives the Motos Sisters. The legal issue was whether they should apply for one or two marriage licenses. The moral issue was whether the conjoined brothers could marry sisters. They got married in the end and at the time of the magazine feature were in the U.S. performing music in vaudeville shows.

ONE TIRING BUT HAPPY DAY.
Was surprised at the turnout for the joint BookSigning this morning at the Center for Kapampangan Studies, Holy Angel University for my latest book "Cabinet of Curiosities" and Ian Alfonso's "Dogs in Philippine History." (Left photo grabbed from Robby Tangtingco)
The biggest surprises though were (RIGHT) the gift of a replica (by Arnel Garcia) of the Laguna Copper Plate a National Cultural Treasure preserved in the National Museum and a set of notecards of artw...

BONIFACIO AND JACINTO DOCUMENTS IN SPAIN.
For many many years primary source documents on the Philippine Revolution lay in the Spanish Military Archives largely unused because these were written in Tagalog. To complicate things further texts were also in Katipunan code.
From the conclusion of a document dated March 8, 1896 we can see two coded signatures: on the Left "Pinkian" the pseudonym of Emilio Jacinto, while the signature on the right, in blue, reads "Maypagasa" the KKK name of...

Reading Historical Documents.
The Philippines as we all know got its name from Felipe, Principe de Asturias, who later became Philip II of Spain. Our post today provides a face to the name from a portrait in the Museo del Prado in Madrid (Right).
When I was in college I came across, Cedulario de Manila, a publication from the Philippine National Archives that was a reprint of Spanish laws for the far-flung colony. From this book I learned that many formal edicts opened with the name o...
