Depending on who you are talking to this is either the original Magellan Cross installed in 1521, or the casing that preserves a part of the original that had been chopped into firewood after Magellan was killed by Lapu-lapu's men in Mactan. What is amazing is that this cross is supposed to grow an inch or two every year! If so, how come it hasn't shot out of the roof of the Shrine long ago?

History Comes Alive! "Doble Kara"
3 December Culminating the 2011 series of the popular History Comes Alive! lectures is "Doble Kara: Rizal in Art and Monuments." Dr. Ocampo delivered a historical account of the making of the Rizal monument and a vignette of related side stories. The lecture also explored the meanings behind the various representations of our national hero, ending with the note "Kanya-Kanyang Rizal." We wish to thank everyone who supported the History Comes Alive! 2011 lecture series possible: Anvil Publishing, Audio-Visual Solutions Corp., BusinessWorld, Team Manila. Thank you also very much to Dr. Ambeth Ocampo for his forever insightful and interesting lectures. And of course, to everyone who went through lines and packed seats, thank you for your patronage (and patience)! We'll do our best to bring you a bigger and better 2012 HCA! series.

As 2011 comes to a close, so does the celebration of Rizal's 150th birth year. Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo posing infront of his painting "Las virgenes cristianas expuestas al populacho" [Christian virgins exposed to the mob] that was awarded a silver medal in the1884 Madrid Exposition of Fine Arts. I wish he checked the pic and had a better one taken. Juan Luna was awarded a gold medal for the" Spoliarium" in the same Expo. From the Alfonso T. Ongpin Photo File.

Some people asked me recently when I will give the next Pasig River tour. Alas that is no more because the aircon river ferry went out of business. Then I do not have the right contacts to end the tour in Malacanang Park like before, this is the best place to take souvenir photos of this iconic building. Photo courtesy of Butch Duque.

My Ayala Museum lectures are often "Standing Room Only" except when it has to compete with an Ateneo-La Salle game when we have "All Seats Taken." So we work around UAAP sked. Yesterday we had all seats taken and a few people standing (sorry about that) we had stiff competition from David Beckham in town playing the Azkals :)
