Olivier van Noort was the first Dutchman to circumnavigate the world. He engaged Antonio de Morga in a historical naval battle in the Philippines.

To celebrate World Teachers Day Im sharing a photo of the table and blackboard (actually a piece of Philippine hardwood) Rizal used in his school in Dapitan. This is displayed in the Rizal Shrine Dapitan, an inspiration to all Filipino teachers.

Today is International Teachers Day and I am fortunate to have been under FIVE Metrobank Outstanding teachers: Ching Cheekee, Gigi de la Cruz, Emerita Quito, the late Marcelino Foronda and Doreen G. Fernandez. Doreen is my hero, she taught me to love research, writing, and teaching. Whatever good people see in me is a tribute to her, all the faults are mine alone. Photo by Stella Kalaw.

Outside downtown San Francisco, in the Presidio, is an old military cemetery where veterans of the Filipino-American War are buried. Most prominent among them being Gen. Frederick Funston who captured Aguinaldo in Palanan Isabela in 1901.

Queridas de Rizal was well received by a packed auditorium in the San Francisco Public Library yesterday. My self esteem would not survive if it were half-full having grown used to over 500 people in the Ayala Museum lectures.

One of the great reads I got from the San Francisco Bookfair was a biography of Dolphy. Thanks to Eric and Epy Quizon for the autographed copy and joining my "Near Famous" list. (Also in photo is National Artist Bencab)

Tracing Rizal's footsteps in San Francisco leads one to the Palace Hotel where he stayed in 1888. The hotel is still in operation and wonderfully preserved.
