My Ayala Museum lecture coming up on December 3, this was the review for the first of the "History Comes Alive" series. Definitely not sugar-coated and am glad she was entertained. :)

The young Fernando Amorsolo poses in his studio with his nude Caucasian models. He is best known for paintings of pastoral scenes of rice planting with sun-burned maidens and carabaos that seem to smile, but he painted many nudes from life.

People who have taken the trouble to go beyond "Noli," "Fili," and "Ultimo Adios" will discover that Rizal's letters can provide hours of fun. These were originally compiled under the direction of Teodoro M. Kalaw in the 1930s as part of a series called "Documentos de la biblioteca nacional de Fili...

TRES CHIC was a salon in downtown Manila that had a competitor named "Cuatro Chic." This salon tucked away in a Makati sidestreet probably competes with "Cheek" and "Sheikh"

Last weekend I accompanied the Reading Association of the Philippines on a pilgrimage to Dapitan. Dapitan, Rizal's place of exile from 1892-1896, is kept clean by those who venerate him as National Hero and God. I spotted them once strolling about in Old Testament attire and they were kind enough to pose with me for a souvenir photo. Was flattered that some of them knew me from my book "Rizal Without the Overcoat."

Last year Dapitan City erected an imposing gilded tableau commemorating Rizal's arrival in his place of exile in 1892, but after spending Peoples Money to erect a monument on Public land, the people for whom this was built cannot get too close :) In Manila the Rizal Monument built from public subscription and erected on public land requires permission from Park authorities if you use anything larger or complicated than a point-and-shoot camera.
