My Inquirer column today on how Apolinario Mabini almost became Supreme Court Chief Justice.

Blocked from being chief justice

There are two statues of seated figures in flowing robes on the wide steps of the Supreme Court building in Manila. I don't know if they are silent sentinels keeping watch on the entrance to the Court. Perhaps they represent historical figures, former justices who were there to protect the instituti...

Depending on who you are talking to this is either the original Magellan Cross installed in 1521, or the casing that preserves a part of the original that had been chopped into firewood after Magellan was killed by Lapu-lapu's men in Mactan. What is amazing is that this cross is supposed to grow an inch or two every year! If so, how come it hasn't shot out of the roof of the Shrine long ago?

This small clay sculpture by Rizal is now lost. So seductive is the woman in bed, so sensuous that Valentin Ventura, Rizal's friend, wanted to take the fastest train from Paris to Belgium to meet the model!

History Comes Alive! "Doble Kara"
3 December Culminating the 2011 series of the popular History Comes Alive! lectures is "Doble Kara: Rizal in Art and Monuments." Dr. Ocampo delivered a historical account of the making of the Rizal monument and a vignette of related side stories. The lecture also explored the meanings behind the various representations of our national hero, ending with the note "Kanya-Kanyang Rizal." We wish to thank everyone who supported the History Comes Alive! 2011 lecture series possible: Anvil Publishing, Audio-Visual Solutions Corp., BusinessWorld, Team Manila. Thank you also very much to Dr. Ambeth Ocampo for his forever insightful and interesting lectures. And of course, to everyone who went through lines and packed seats, thank you for your patronage (and patience)! We'll do our best to bring you a bigger and better 2012 HCA! series.

As 2011 comes to a close, so does the celebration of Rizal's 150th birth year. Christmas will come and 2012 will mark the 200th birthday of Melchora Aquino, better known as Tandang Sora, now the name of a bustling Quezon City street. She was born on Jan. 6, 1812, when the Catholic calendar listed t...
