Friday Field Trip – Vindicator Valley Trail
As a continuation of last week’s post, I’m including the second part of our excursion, which was to hike the Vindicator Valley Trail in Victor, CO so Hubster could see all the mine crap stuff left over from when Victor and Cripple Creek were major gold mining towns. Feebie liked this part of the day much better than looking at leaves. They’re all shades of gray to her. (Can you find her in the picture?)

Author Events from the Other Side
On Monday, I gave tips for authors when participating in author events. Today, I’ll step to the other side of the table and offer a few tips and observations based on the events I’ve attended.
For organizers:
When it comes to organizing an event, maybe ‘tips’ isn’t the best word here. It’s more like questions to be addressed. There are no right or wrong answers, just things to consider. And, most importantly, all of this information needs to be shared with the participating authors well in a...

What’s Cooking Wednesday – Noodle Kugel
Today is Yom Kippur, which means no eating until sundown. We’ve always included a noodle kugel as part of the breaking of the fast. I posted this recipe on my other blog back in 2011, but I’m sure it’ll be new to many of you.

In the Interview Room – Pamela Almand, Part 2
I’m continuing my interview with Pamela Almand, “The Captain’s Voice.” You can find part 1 here.
For audiobooks, how do you determine the voices for each character?
I always read a book through and make spreadsheet notes on the author’s descriptions of characters and their voices. (You hate to get through half the narration and find your main character was a life-long smoker!) I also have to take into consideration physical limitations… Derek’s voice, for example, was low and rumbling… and to...

Tips for Author Events
Last week, I participated in a “Local Author Showcase” hosted by the Woodland Park branch of our Rampart Library district. Six authors participated. Of the six, I was the only author there writing fiction. The other authors displayed their books on subjects ranging from local history to the 50 US capitols, to soul coaching, to eggs (my fave of all the books—the author, Kevin Haley, was a hoot!) to how finding God changed the author’s life. An eclectic group to be sure. Then there was me with...

Friday Field Trip – Fall Colors
We made our annual trek up the mountain to look at the fall colors. This year has been a very good one with lots of reds and deep oranges along with the gold.
Enjoy.

Celebrate the Indie Author
Indie publishing (sounds better than self-publishing, which has remnants of a vanity press stigma) is growing. There’s even an Indie Author Day—October 8th—where libraries across the country are hosting events to help raise awareness of this publishing option. Amazon’s indie author branch, KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) has declared the entire month of October a time to celebrate indie authors, with a dedicated page on the Amazon site and a hashtag, #PoweredByIndie for social media.
There are...

What’s Cooking Wednesday – Challah
**Contest Alert. Today, October 5th, is the last day to enter to win a copy of Rooted in Danger and/or an audiobook download of In Hot Water. Enter at Booklover’s Bench, and while you’re there, be sure to enter the $25 gift card giveaway.
In honor of Rosh Hashanah, I’m repeating my recipe for Challah, which for the holiday is baked in a round loaf to symbolize the end of one year and the beginning of the next. I often add raisins.
