What’s Cooking Wednesday – Grilled Rosemary Lamb Chops

Hubster discovered a new butcher shop in town, and decided to splurge on lamb chops. Coincidentally, someone brought in a bunch of fresh rosemary to our yoga class, and I found this recipe at Epicurious. Their recipe called for mesquite wood chips and a charcoal grill, but we have a gas grill, so that’s how Hubster prepared them.

In the Interview Room – Micki Browning

Micki BrowningToday I welcome Micki Browning to Terry’s Place. Micki is the author of Adrift, the first of the Mer Cavallo Mysteries, set in Key Largo, Florida.

What’s your biggest distraction when you should be writing?
Social media. During my career in law enforcement, I avoided social media for a host of reasons. When I became an author, I realized that I had to embrace it as a way to interact with readers. Now I’m making up for lost time– and losing far too much of it in the process.

Plotter or Pantser...

A Tale of Three Ads

3 Marketing NewslettersWhether you’re an indie author or traditionally published (not counting the Big Names), odds are you’re going to be faced with marketing. One facet of this process is advertising in newsletters that go out to subscribers looking for bargains in their preferred genres. The five-hundred-pound gorilla here is BookBub, but it’s not easy to get into. Plus, it’s expensive. Odds are, you’re going to be turned down, since they only accept about 25-30% of submissions. What else can you do?

Friday Field Trip – Night Skies

Jason’s back this week with some photos from one of his recent photography safaris. If you’d like to know more about taking pictures like these, see the end of this post.

Summer is the perfect time for night sky photography! Not only are the nights pleasant and warm, but in the northern hemisphere, this is the best time of year to

I just returned from Utah, where I taught a night sky photography workshop. For three nights, we explored the dark skies of Utah, where we could see the Milky Way...

Sneak Peek – In Dire Straits

in-dire-straits-300x450My newsletter subscribers got to see a ‘false start’ to In Dire Straits. Now that I’ve been working on the second round of edits, I’ll share a much closer version of the opening to the third book in my Triple-D Ranch series. (And today’s the last day to get In Hot Water and In Deep Trouble for 99 cents.)

In Dire Straits

With each tenth of a mile the odometer ticked away, Rebecca Morgan’s regret mounted. She’d left Colorado Springs without breakfast, and didn’t think a rumbling stomach would p...

J.M. MaurerToday I welcome J.M. Maurer to Terry’s Place. J.M. is the author of the Emerging From Darkness romance trilogy.

6 Tips for Writing Character Descriptions

PonytailsI recently started a book I’d received at a conference. I’d never heard of the author, and was looking forward to adding this one to my collection. I love discovering new authors and new characters, and since this book was part of a series, I knew, if I enjoyed it, there would be more.

I settled in to meet the characters. The first paragraph immediately punched some of my buttons. I prefer a “deep” or “close” point of view, and if the first time I meet a character, she’s brushing her thick au...
