I’ve Been Working

I’ve Been Working

drummers hands showing blue sleeves and white gloves playing drumsI haven’t posted here in a while, but that’s because … drum roll … I’ve been working. I finished the manuscript! Okay, I finished a draft of the manuscript, but I hit “The End” last Friday. It’s the tenth novel in my Mapleton Mystery series, and Gordon and Angie are caught up in a convoluted case.

And, another drum roll … I have a title! Some people have one when they start, but in almost every case, that’s not me. I need to write the book and then see what fits, not the other ...

It’s Labor Day

It’s Labor Day

labor day giveaway

Labor Day is a holiday for many, so I decided to take the day off myself and rerun what is becoming my annual Labor Day post.

Here’s some information about the history of Labor Day (I don’t think there’s anything in there about massive retail sales.)

And some fun facts about the holiday.

Whatever you do, please be safe.

Friday Fotos – Victor and Cripple Creek

Friday Fotos – Victor and Cripple Creek

Our anniversary getaway was close to home this year. We went to the old mining towns of Victor and Cripple Creek, places we’ve been before, but we stayed at a new hotel and had our celebratory dinner in their upscale restaurant. The weather was rainy off and on, but didn’t interfere with our plans much. We walked around the towns, hiked around the mine trails, and took pictures. I’m still finalizing my gallery, but here are some of mine.

Our Anniversary Getaway

Our Anniversary Getaway

scenic view near Victor Colorado with abandoned mine headframe, blue skies and white cloudsThe Hubster and I took a short trip for our anniversary, and I regarded it as a true getaway. No working. He made all the arrangements, and I was happy to let him make all the plans. Hubster wanted to try a new hotel in Cripple Creek, touted as a luxury 4-star facility. No objections from me.

Our trip began Saturday morning, driving up the mountain to Victor, an old mining town near Cripple Creek. His plan was to stop there for lunch. But … there are numerous hiking trail...

I’ve posted some of the images from my recent trip to Nickerson Beach and Lido Beach on Long Island to photograph shore birds, but I’ve finally put together a gallery of my favorites.

You can find them here. Hope you enjoy them!

Have a nice weekend to those who celebrate.

Dialogue Revisited

Dialogue Revisited

I’ve posted about dialogue several times before in this blog. For me, dialogue’s number one purpose is to show who is doing the talking. Many authors shy away from using the word “said” to fulfill this purpose. Not me. “Said” is pretty much invisible to readers. The eye skips right over it. Creative speaker tags can do the opposite. They call attention to themselves instead of the words being spoken. cartoon of two men with empty dialogue bubbles above their heads

Yes, I do use tags other than ‘said’ but rarely, and I think about each one ...

Word Fun – Binomials

Word Fun – Binomials

scrambled eggs, slices of ham and an orange slice on a white plateI ran across an article about binomials a while back. When I saw “binomials” my first thought sent me back to high school algebra, and I almost scrolled past. (Which is why I prefaced the title of this article with Word Fun. Didn’t want to scare anyone away.)

As a writer, words are my tools, and it’s always interesting to me to look at the ways we use them. I hadn’t thought about binomials, or realized they were a “thing” in our language. Anyway, here’s a bit more about them...
