God saw it before we were connected. I am so glad that she did the foreword unreservedly and now look at the work we both do.? We release shame, guilt-instead we heal and free women……what a powerful testimony? I am so ready to support you on #50shadesofsilence. Follow this movement guys.

Tips to finish strong in 2017.

IMG_5510

After a busy day yesterday, (with new and existing clients) all having one agenda that of trying to finish strong and start 2018 running.

It was not hard to realise that , far too many of us continue to get trapped in the same cycle every year.

We are indecisive from February to say October and then the new year anxiety kicks in.

Its time we stop this and get things in order.

My suggestions are:

** create a 90 day plan for the first 90 days of each new year, try to implement as much as you can from it and stay on course.

*** have an accountability partner who will keep you on track. This could be a coach, mentor, friend etc.

**** do monthly or quarterly inventory of your life or business. Knowing where you are will give you feedback to decide what needs tweaking instead of waiting for last minute.

Supermarkets do daily inventory -hence they are always ordering as they know what’s finish on their shelves.

**take time to reflect and regroup. we go through the the next 98 days -get on track and do not wait until it all falls down to get back on track.

My hair groom was overdue- I am loving the freedom I feel with my natural hair………years ago I was being disingenuous with who I am as a person to please my then husband. I would wear all sorts of hair from Brazilian to- I can’t even recall now and once he left I started feeling I needed to be true to me.

I gradually threw out the weaves, wigs and started being more authentic to who I am…who I BE.

Thankfully today I don’t have to worry about my wig falling off on stage like I use to ……..I stand in my crown powerfully.

#Lesson: don’t do things to please the crowd, please you first and stand authentically in who you BE.

Thanks Millie Bailey for making me not perm my hair that day.

CAN I BE OPEN AND VULNERABLE WITH YOU?

its-not-over-until-its-over-quote-1

CAN I BE OPEN AND VULNERABLE WITH YOU?

A few years ago on a day like this, I woke up realising that I was on a treadmill of a life. Nothing was working, there were debts, misery, deception and even an intent or the feeling that being gone would be better. Parts of it as what came with the Christmas season that was setting in- and the other parts were a mixture of rejection and the fact that nothing was really working out in my life.

I sat in my house for 5 days and didn’t wash, ( yes no washing ) I was stank and I simply didn’t care. Nothing mattered, my entire life stood still and I was in total and utter autopilot.

I was of no use to my kids #EXCEPT for ensuring that they were safe in the house, cooking their meals and made sure they were ok. As for me, Ava Brown she didn’t exist, didn’t matter and frankly could have been dead for all I cared. I was a mess……..self-esteem, the confidence you name it ..second failed marriage, single mama, again…..in court and totally broke. Death looked better.

Then I had an AWAKENING- one that jolted me …….I heard myself ask myself what would happen to my kids if I took my own life?

you-are-good-enough

The fear of them being put into care was not something I wanted for them -BUT more so they would be separated as is the case in many situations I knew all too well. NO NOT MY KIDS I TOLD MYSELF!

DAMN!!! I didn’t need anything more to get me into the shower. I didn’t just shower I took a freezing COLLDDD ass shower. I needed to get my act together for my kids. I have never looked back since and life continues to have challenges BUT I anchor on my WHY -these two beautiful kids that make me feel complete.

#Question: Have you ever felt lost?

Felt like you needed an awakening?

Like life isn’t worth it?

That this season is one that truly brings your reality to your face and you need to switch the game?

If so- I can relate…….know that help is around.

I am ready to help you stay on track and accountable to your dreams.

Why not get in my diary today and let’s have a chat?

Sexual abuse and its legacy

str2_in_0506_cover_in_11-770x470

For anyone that has gone through any form of sexual abuse the road that must be taken transitions from the feeling of “victim” to “victor ”. There is no “getting over it” but instead, learning the process of getting through it. This requires that you have guidance both from professionals and from those that have shared experiences.

Sexual abuse comes in many forms and each is just as vile as the next. From rape and incest to sexual molestation, it is difficult to separate the fact that the act was not about sex, but instead about power over the individual. Sexual abuse happens all over the world and is sickly, one of the top crimes in some countries. Survivors run a gamut of feelings and emotions and it’s important to know what to expect and to recognize them for what they are. The feelings of guilt, shame, remorse, low self-esteem and relationship intimacy problems are wrapped up in a complicated scenario of oneself. The main rule is to know that it is not your fault and this must be a mantra that you carry with you every day.

There are steps to get survivors from where they began to where they need to be and the first involves seeking out a local program that addresses crisis assistance. This will help as baseline groundwork to bring recognition to everything that the person is going through. In a goodtherapy.org article they state:

“Immediate crisis assistance after a sexual assault can prove invaluable and even save lives, but therapy can also be helpful for those who experienced sexual abuse in the past. Some therapists specialize in addressing the  trauma  of sexual assault, and long-term assistance may be beneficial to some survivors of sexual abuse.”

It’s very common to have feelings of suspicion and lack of trust. Reporting to the authorities may have that twist of futility, but it’s important to realize that while you don’t have to press charges, reporting may keep someone else from attack and can allow you to feel as if you are taking an action. This can help as a step to feeling less vulnerable and assist in putting you back in control of your life.

If you are in a situation where the abuse may happen again, you need to seek out the help of those that can protect you. There are many shelters that are in various places that are designed for this purpose and they have people that have shared your trauma and know what you are going through. If you are unsure, you can find a local sexual abuse hotline and in contacting them, they can walk you through some of your choices as well as connect you with those that you need to talk to.

Healing

For those that have experienced sexual abuse, there is often a feeling of great loss and hopelessness. A major part of the journey involves knowing what to do to move your life forward. You should not try to heal alone, try to forget that it happened or ignore the emotions and feelings that you have.

A HelpGuide.org site hits the topic straight on in their statement:

“The impact of sexual violence goes far beyond any physical injuries. When you’ve been raped, the world doesn’t feel like a safe place anymore. You no longer trust others. You don’t even trust yourself. You may question your judgment, your self-worth, and even your sanity. You may blame yourself for what happened or believe you’re “dirty” or “damaged goods.” Relationships feel dangerous, intimacy impossible. And on top of that, you may—like many rape survivors—struggle with  PTSD anxiety , and  depression .

It’s important to remember that what you’re experiencing is a normal reaction to trauma. Your feelings of helplessness, shame, defectiveness, and self-blame are symptoms, not reality. Dispelling the toxic victim-blaming myths about sexual violence can help you start healing.”

The process of healing involves dealing with what happened to you and this includes talking about it as well as understanding the “myths” that surround sexual abuse. The latter is a great undertaking as there are so many wrongs that involve sexual abuse myths. You need to try to take the view that speaking about the incident is part of the healing process. It will also help you as you go through the flashbacks and upsetting memories. Learning how to deal with them means not dealing with them alone.

Becoming Resilient

The goal for those that have gone through sexual abuse includes recognition of the key elements that they need in dealing with and moving forward:

· Reach out to someone that you trust, even when it’s scary.

· Challenge your sense of isolation and helplessness by regaining control of your coping skills and strengths.

· Assign the responsibility where it belongs: the abuser

Each of these elements may seem like a long part of the journey but when you establish yourself in a support group, counselling and other safe havens that can let you express your anger, grief, anguish and outrage. This type of support environment will also help to let you recognize potential “triggers” and teach you how to deal with them.

There are more organizations and professionals today that specialize in knowing and understanding sexual abuse. You can empower yourself on the long journey, but you need the help of others so that you can move forward with your life in a positive way.

Dr Ava Eagle Brown is s victor of both child sexual and adult sexual abuse at gunpoint. She works with girls and women who have been the victim of abuse to help they walk with grace, confidence and restoration. Her work helps women become whole again by using techniques and strategies she has had to use to get out of the shadows and back into the game called life.

Her book The Mango Girl is out now and addresses a number of these issues.

Citi Honors Dr Ava Eagle Brown with Prestigious Award

20031960_10155310466316011_5395277021446680938_nToday’s business world is more competitive than ever before and it is a rare find to locate a company that has both visions- and offers encouragement for future female talent. Citi is one of these incredible organisations, as they recognise women in professional roles and have empowered them by supporting the “We Are the City Rising Star Awards”.

Citi honoured Dr Ava Eagle Brown with the Entrepreneur Award, presented by Jane Karczewski, Managing Director at Citi within Strategic Risk Solutions, and Co-Chair of Citi Women in London. Her role encompasses client focus, results-oriented leadership and support of the young talent in the business world. An accomplished and respected leader in her specialised area of Solutions, and in Diversity, Ms Karczewski forges strong relationships and recognises excellence.

Sponsorship of the awards is part of Citi’s ongoing mission to provide an innovative network for women to achieve their full potential. Dr Brown’s work as an international speaker, author and transformation mindset coach complements the Citi strategy to create and reinforce a diverse workforce through the support of women in business.

The Rising Star awards were introduced to showcase the UK pipeline of female talent below management level and to create 100 female role models across 20 different industries and professions as well as celebrating the hard work and support of our Rising Star Champions and Company of the Year. The winners were narrowed down from over 1,250 nominations and were judged by a panel of 33 independent judges. Over 35,000 public votes were received for the 200 shortlisted nominees from around the world.

Dr Brown’s lifelong commitment as an inspirational leader has involved a long personal journey. The lessons that she has learned has given her the ability to rise from the ashes of devastation and share her knowledge so that she has helped so many to rewrite their own stories and be empowered to understand that the word ‘Impossible’ means ‘I’m Possible’. Her presentations have given hope to many women so that they can claim their best self. Ava’s style is a refreshing sense of transparency, authenticity, enthusiasm and an open armed sharing to welcome success for all.

There is a sense of logical balance between Dr Brown’s life work and the Citi global strategy in their focus on enabling women to thrive in a diverse meritocracy that demands excellence, initiative and courage. Ava promotes and encourages possibilities for women to hone their talents, claiming the lives that they were meant to live in abundance, joy, peace and success. Citi takes pride as a strong supporter of innovation and entrepreneurship through their strategic partnerships, comprehensive programs and innovative efforts in embracing new skills and new methods of working. Recognizing Dr Brown for this prestigious honour is a moment of synergy that is a fusion of matching philosophies and ideologies.

Ava’s ability to tap into each person’s inner talent and allow them to realise their potential is one of the key elements that she is so well-known for. Her presentations bring a sense of hope as well as opening doors for women of all levels, but especially for those that want to embark on an entrepreneurial journey. Dr Brown’s natural intuitive abilities allow her to connect with those that want to pursue their dreams and she shows them how they can accomplish them.

The Citi Foundation “Pathways to Progress” is a philanthropic effort to strengthen global talent by the active involvement of dedicated Citi volunteers. Their unique insight is followed by actions that support female entrepreneurs of the future as an important initiative that has proven to lead to economic growth on a global scale.

Cultural and ethnic diversity, combined with the empowerment of women to achieve their ultimate abilities is the shared philosophies of both Citi and Dr Ava Brown, and it is, therefore, no surprise that Citi recognised the connection and honoured Dr Brown with the Entrepreneur Award. This is the exact definition of the term ‘serendipitous’, as both the Citi organisation and Dr Ava Brown came together to share their commonalities and work together to move progress forward for women around the world.
