Becoming an Author who can Sell
This will be short and sweet. I recently posted about my intention to do a series of posts on Venture Prose about learning to sell. I wanted to cross promote this through my KBMedia blog because it is an important skill for all writers to have.

The Last Five Days
It has been a short while since I posted anything on here (spinning off Venture Prose doesn't really count a "post" to me).A lot has happened in the last five days and I want to bring everyone up to speed. First, I've done a little redecorating and I'll be doing some more. I launched Venture Prose a couple weeks ago and have since made it its own website. (My post introducing VP) Now it is time to re-imagine and revamp Uncommon Sense.

Good Bye Venture Prose!
As promised when I introduced Venture Prose, the VP blog has been spun off.
You can find the dedicated Venture Prose blog here.
This will be the place all future VP posts are published.
Uncommon Sense will remain active as my personal blog and as a platform for indie author promotion. So no worries. :-)

Venture Prose - The Cost of Publishing (Spending Wisely)
Can you do it for free?
You can! I did! And I will never do it again -
I published The Bad 100% free. I got my cousin to do the cover art. I made the cover in MS Paint (I know, shut up.). I used the free word processing software that came on my computer to write the manuscript. I used Google Docs to format it.
On that glorious day in late July 2014 I was feeling pretty proud of myself. I wasn't going to advertise, word of mouth and my social media presence would be plenty. The next stop wou...

Venture Prose - Niche Books - Aim Small, Miss Small
Remember that quote from The Patriot? "Aim small, miss small." I cannot think of a more appropriate time to use it.
Niche Books
Just in case you don't know what they are, niche books deal with a very specific topic or theme. In fiction, a sub-genre like Splatter Punk (look it up!) is a niche market. In nonfiction, a book about collectible coin grading would enjoy a niche market.
It's nice to have a niche.
The more focused your book is on one subject, the greater the possibility you could access a...

Venture Prose - Pricing
Businesses exist to make money. (Unless they're a non-profit, of course, but most self publishing authors are not non-profits.) The objective is to sell a product or service for more money than it costs you to produce or provide. Simple right?
What goes into the cost of producing a book?
With large publishers there is an army of people to pay. Among them are: the editor, the junior editor, the proofreader, the graphic designer, the person who lays it out, the PR people, the sales people, t...

Venture Prose
On 3/14/15 I posted about the founding of my company, Kendall Bailey Media. It was an exciting post for me because I felt like I was doing something, or that I was making forward progress toward a goal. Today, I want to tell you about one of the facets of that goal. It's called Venture Prose.
Venture Prose? -
Say the name out loud, "Venture Prose." Doesn't sound like it has anything to do with writing huh? That's fine, because this blog post isn't an audio recording and you can see the type of...

Kendall Bailey Media
Yep, it's a thing now. Kendall Bailey Media is registered in Minnesota. My company's first project will be publishing my second novel. What a surprise!
So who cares? I am one of who knows how many self-publishing authors with their own publishing company. Why is this blog-worthy? Because, dear reader, I did not start a publishing company. I started a media company. Print, audio, video, and interactive (think games/apps)-- that's media!
Obviously, this is a long-term plan. It will take years to...
