See What Sticks

Sometimes you just need to throw stuff out there and see what sticks. Okay. That is what I always do with my blog. And believe it or not, some stuff has actually stuck. All of it really. After all, the internet is forever. Whatever you put out there on the ole World Wide Web stays there forever. Regardless of what they say. But that is a topic for another day. Rather, was a topic already. I really just want to talk about stickiness.

If anybody really knew what sticks out there, he or she wou...

Happy Mother’s Day

Moms have the hardest job in the world. That is why we have Mother’s Day. To thank them for doing such a hard and thankless job.

I know we have Mother’s Day to thank our moms for being our moms. For thanking our wives for being the moms to our children. For thanking our grandmas for being our grandmas. It is a wonderful day of saying thank you. But if we really took the time to think about the job of being a mom, we would want to give them much more than chocolate, flowers, and a card.

But w...

A Blog for Her Birthday

What do you get for the woman who has everything? A blog post, of course. Unfortunately, with The Mindboggling Mrs. Miyoshi, that does not cut it. Still, perhaps it is better than nothing.

Actually, I know that a blog post dedicated to my wonderful wife, is not better than nothing. It is actually a lot worse than nothing. (I am sure I heard her call me a liar again.) Even though she has everything anybody could ever want, she still needs a tangible gift. And time. (But that is another story....

Go Fund Me, Amazon

We were talking about higher education and how to help Thing 2 get through college without too much debt (ours and his), when we ended up talking about GoFundMe.com and other crowdsourcing. Not being one to miss the opportunity to promote myself, I said, we already have a way to beg for money. It is called Amazon.

Do not get me wrong. I believe there are legitimate reasons to use crowdsourcing. And I do not really think it is begging. At least not always. I just happen to think that our not...

Sometimes…

Sometimes, regardless of best intentions, you do not get the job done. Or is that just me?

I was posting my blog the other day and ended up not getting any writing done. Or at least nothing new. Except these few sentences. And a twitter post of a six-word story.

Talk about disappointing. However, the great thing about writing is that you can just pick up where you left off. (I am writing this on a different day.) Or at least most of the time I can. Then again, I find that I have almost as ma...

Plugging Myself

If I was smarter, I would do what most authors seem to do. I would blog about my writing. Or at the very least, I would use social media to promote my blogging which points to my writing. Or something like that.

It seems that most authors these days have a blog. They write about this and that, but they seem to point to other writings in their blogs. They point to this book or that book that they wrote. They point to magazine articles they wrote. They point to themselves. They are smart. They...

I Am in a Rut [1]

There are times when I think I ought to just quit writing. Or at least quit blogging.

I could not give up writing all together. It is too much a part of who I am. I sometimes just think that blogging is not my thing. That I have bigger fish to fry. It is not that I look down on blogging or bloggers. I just feel that I have more to write than these snippets of life.

To be sure, I know that I am no Poe or Twain or Dumas. The stories and verses I write would probably make the greats cringe. But...

Windows 10 Start Menu Not Working

[Note: If you just want the fix without the amusing the story, just scroll down to the bottom.]

If you look up (in Google or Bing or whatever your favorite internet search engine) “Windows 10 start menu not working,” you will get tons of technical ways to fix it. One of them might even work.

I am not an early adopter. Nor am I a cynic or naysayer. I am just patiently optimistic. Whenever something new and exciting comes along, I try to wait until others find the bugs and work out problems be...

Martha’s Lemonade

There are some people who live the phrase, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” My friend Martha Patterson was one of those people.

Martha lived a hard life in many respects. Or at least she had a rough start. She had an “overbearing mother” who caused her much grief, but who she did forgive through the love of Christ. She had to start over a time or two, but found her calling as a licensed practical nurse and caregiver. She buried two husbands, but raised a...
