Better Than a Kick in the Seat of the Pants

Apparently, I say the same things over and over and over. And if I had a smart phone, I could listen to myself.

Last year, a couple of my AP Computer Science students made an app called The Miyoshi Soundboard that they released on Google Play. It is just a collection of some of the things I say during class. That apparently, I say a lot. Like I said, over and over and over again.

It is funny to read the reviews on it. Students and former students tell about finding their inner truth and say...

Memes Are a Thing

Apparently, a meme is a thing. (Which apparently, our kids have tried to explain to us more than one time.)

We got on the conversation of memes at Thing 3’s fifteenth birthday dinner around Thanksgiving. I do not remember how the conversation got started, but it ended up with a search on the internet. (Now that the kids have tablets, they can race their mother to look up stuff. But that is another story.) According to various websites, memes are ideas that get passed around and become part o...

This Christmas Feels Like Thanksgiving

Free Religious Christmas Clipart

This year, Christmas feels like Thanksgiving in many ways.

Christmas is always a celebration of Christ’s birth at our house. It is a time to reflect that in giving presents to each other, we are trying to reflect the most blessed gift that God ever gave to us, His Son. It is a time for family. It is a time to just enjoy each other. This year, it is also a time to be thankful.

Our family was planning on being with my parents this Christmas. Little did I know t...

Miyoshi Claus Is Coming to Town

Chorus 1:
You better watch out, you better beware
When you’re in his class, you better not swear
Miyoshi Claus is coming to town
He’s wanderin’ ‘round his room every day
Listenin’ to what the kiddies might say
Miyoshi Claus is coming to town

He sees you when you’re surfing
He hears you say bad words
He makes you do your pushups
Even though it seems absurd

(Chorus 1)

His students like to make fun
Of things he likes to say
They even made an app for that
Get it on Google Play

(Chorus 1)

His stu...

Servant Leader [1]

My boss said that there are two times when people say good things about you, when you retire and when you die. He was hoping to put them both off for a while, but he is retiring. And people said some pretty nice things about him.

I have worked for Clarence Lavarias for eighteen and a half years. He is a great high school principal and a great boss. Cedarcrest High School and I will miss him.

The Riverview School District board recognized Clarence at their latest meeting. It was nice to hear...

Star Trek Meets Sesame Street

This image is in the public domain.

My wife, The Mindboggling Mrs. Miyoshi, thinks that Star Wars is Star Trek meets Sesame Street.

Now, before you get up your ire against her (or me), let me assure you that I do not share her point of view. Not totally. I love Star Wars. And Star Trek. And Sesame Street. So even if my wife was right about the apparent merger, I would still like Star Wars.

My wife’s complaint about Star Wars is that there are Muppets. (She does not like shows with animation...

TV Dog

I do not know why, but our dog likes to hog the TV remote. It is probably because she gets used to having her own way when she is alone in the house, so she thinks she can control the TV even when the rest of us are home. But before I get too far and my wife, The Mindboggling Mrs. Miyoshi, starts calling me a liar, I must admit that I have never seen our dog, Yukiko, turn on the TV or use the remote to control it in any way. I am just suspicious that she does. Still, I took a few pictures as...

Pause, Rest, and Worship

The Wayside Chapel looks like a miniature church, steeple and all. It sits beside Highway 2 on the Monroe side of Sultan, Washington. Every time I drive by it, I think, “I ought to stop there.” I was glad when I finally did, even if it was not a burning bush type moment.

There is a large sign near the chapel inviting passersby to “pause, rest, and worship.” It also warns that there are no facilities. I did not stop because I wanted to pause, rest, or worship, nor did I need to use the facili...

Not No-Shave November

Even if I tried, nobody would believe that I participated in No Shave November. Oh sure, I might have a little stubble or maybe even a couple long whiskers, but people would just say that I did a poor job of shaving for a month rather than not shaving at all.

While I may have tried NaNoWriMo (writing 50,000 words toward a novel in the month of November) a couple times, I have never participated in No Shave November. It is not that I do not think I could grow an amazing beard like the guys in...

November Is NaNoWriMo

Image courtesy of National Novel Writing Month.

It is November and that means writing. Personally, I am not going to do NaNoWriMo this year. But I definitely encourage others to participate.

November is National Novel Writing Month. (Thus the shortened version NaNoWriMo.) People from all over the world take to their keyboards or pick up their pens and paper to write, write, write. All month long. Professional and amateurs and wannabes start something that most will either not finish, deny th...
